designed his work on the pattern of the Kāvya Prakāśa of Mammața. Kāvya Prakāśa is an outstanding work in Sanskrit poetics not for the originality of ideas but for establishing the authority of the new school of Dhvani and presenting in the succinct form of a book all previous speculations in poetics. On account of its comprehensive and compromising nature the Kävya Prakāsa gained popularity and became a proper model work for subsequent writers to write digests on the prevalen topics of Sanskrit poetics.
Alamkāra Kaustubha though based on the Kāvya Prakāsa and being a derivative work shows trait of originality here and there. He has something new to offer regarding the division of Kāvya which influenced even a great critic Pandita Raja Jagannātha. Our author says that the capacity of the implicit idea (vyangyartha) to suggest an other suitable sense as also strikingness of sound and sense infuse additional beauty into Uttama Kävya and converts it into one of uttamottama type. यदि ध्वनिवैशिष्टये ध्वन्यन्तरवैशिष्टयं स्यात् , यदि वा शब्दार्थयोः वैचित्र्यञ्च भवति तदा काव्यमुत्तमोत्तमम् । Thus according to our author the firon can be of four varieties out of these that variety will be Uttamottama where suggested sense is revealed by suggested sense.eqasarusteita or where along with the beauty of predominent suggested sense the strikingness of word and sense is appealing. ufc at greater utafazi wafa TCT TOGETHEHE In this way Kavi Karnapura brings out the importance of the charm of sound and sense in Kāvya which has been neglected by Dhvani vādins. The kāvya is splended on account of the charm of Dhvani. But it is more beautiful when it is endowed with the strikingness of word and sense. Dhvani embellished by the strikingness of word and sense is far more superior to simple Dhvani bereft of the charm of word and sense. Even the Kavya of second grade can become first rate with the strikingness of Sabda and Artha.
Regarding the connotation of the word Dhvani in different technical sense the author is of the view that the word Dhvani really stands for Vyañgayārtha Vyāpāra. The use of the word Dhvani in the sense of function Vyañjana Vyāpāra or Kävya or. Vyanjaka Sabda and Artha is only secondary. वस्तुतस्तु ध्वन्यत इदमिति
