Preface
[35]
There are seven types of Samudghata (emergence or emanation of the soul's attributes): 1. Vedana Samudghata, 2. Kashaya Samudghata, 3. Vaikriyika Samudghata, 4. Aharaka Samudghata, 5. Taijasa Samudghata, 6. Maranantika Samudghata, and 7. Kevali Samudghata. Vedana Samudghata is the emergence of the soul's regions due to the pain caused by diseases in the body. Kashaya Samudghata is the emergence of the soul's regions due to passions like anger. Vaikriyika Samudghata is the expansion of the soul's regions from the original body to the additional body created by celestial beings and others during the time of transformation. Aharaka Samudghata is the emergence of the soul's regions in the form of an aharaka (food-karmic) doll for the purpose of resolving doubts of a restrained ascetic. Taijasa Samudghata is the emergence of the soul's regions in the form of a favorable or unfavorable taijasa (fiery) doll when the ascetic's state of equanimity or grace is awakened. Maranantika Samudghata is when the soul's regions emerge, extend to the place of the next birth, and then return back during the last moments before death. Kevali Samudghata is the expansion of the Kevali Bhagavan's (Omniscient Lord's) soul regions in the form of punishment, doors, protection, and filling the universe, for the purpose of shedding the remaining non-destructive karmas.
In the state of these seven Samudghatas, the soul's region exceeds the region of the body's immersion. Additionally, the expansion of the soul's regions outside the body is also observed during the Upapada (rebirth) state. Upapada refers to the soul taking birth in a different state, leaving its previous state. Thus, the ten states are: 1. Svasthana-svasthana, 2. Vihara-vat-svasthana, 3. Vedana, 4. Kashaya, 5. Vaikriyika, 6. Aharaka, 7. Taijasa, 8. Maranantika, 9. Kevali Samudghata, and 10. Upapada. The discussion on which souls in which Gunasthanas (stages of spiritual development) and Marganās (spiritual paths) have touched how much region in the past is elaborated in this Sparsana Prarupana (exposition of touch).
However, here a brief overview is provided. The Mithyadristi (wrong-believer) souls reside throughout the entire universe, so their Svasthana-gata (residing in one's own place) region is the entire universe. They have touched the entire universe in the past and will continue to do so in the future, in relation to the states possible in this Gunasthana.
It is important to note that Aharaka Samudghata and Taijasa Samudghata occur only in the sixth Gunasthana (of the ascetic), not in others. Kevali Samudghata is possible only in the thirteenth Gunasthana, not elsewhere. Vaikriyika Samudghata occurs in the initial four Gunastanas of celestial beings, hell beings, or ascetics with supernatural powers. Bhogabhumi (pleasure realm) humans and animals also have a separate form of Vaikriyika Samudghata. Vedana, Kashaya, and Maranantika Samudghatas occur in the first, second, and fourth, etc. Gunastanas of all the four gati (modes of existence).
