________________ 3h 68/2, 3 -1, 2015 JAIN MODEL OF LIFE SPAN : A Scientific Approach - Dr Samani Chaitya Pragya Abstract We observe a great difference of life span among species and so also among the members of the species. What determines the length of life is a problem of the present research. It is hypothised that a number of factors play their role in life span determination and there exists an intricate relation between these factors. It analyzes various factors that determine the life span both in the field of Jainism and science and concludes that a life span is determined by a number of factors, namely - karma, genes, prç'a and other factors and there exists an intricate relation between these factors. All of them as a team determine the lifespan. Some men live more than 100 years, No mouse lives more than 4 years. Why is it two more than 4 years. Why two mammalian species so similar in many ways should have such a very different life spans? During past twenty years, Gerontology has attracted the interest of increasing number of biologists. This has led to rapid accumulation of knowledge regarding ageing. But still very little is known as Mc dawar (1946) opines - "The problems of natural death and old age are hardly yet acknowledged to be within the province of genuine scientific enquiry." Yet we see that a number of hypotheses have been and is being put forward various scientists, as follows:
