________________ 3744 62/4, ther-FHE 2009 Jaina Studies in Russia - Natalia Zheleznova From the early beginning the Jaina Studies in Russia were very marginal and sporadical in comparison with Buddhist and Brahmanistic Studies. Only few Russian Indologists had got interest in Jainism and tried to make research work on this Indian tradition. The Jaina Studies in Russia have started in the beginning of 20th century when some Russian Indologist had got interested in this old Indian religion and philosophy. The first publication containing information about Jainism was the article by Russian Indologist N.D. Mironow “Jainickija Zamytki” (Notes on Jain Studies) in Bulletin de 1 Academie Imperiale des Sciences de St.-Petersburg(1911). There years later a book "Nirvana and Salvation" (1914) written by Nikolay Gerasimov has devoted one chapter to the Jain doctrine of salvation was published!. Along with other different Indian teachings of Deliverance N. Gerasimov has explained the main principles of the tirthankaras' understanding of the doctrine of Liberation. This book was not based on text analyses of Jaina sources: The author had taken the whole information about Jainism from European of Jaina literature on Indian thought. Next publication was the article by Ivan.P.Minaev in the Journal of Ministry of Local Education named "Information about Jainas and Buddhists". Besides these three publication till the middle of the century there was no other information about Jain doctrine available in Russia. During this time Jainism was included into the textbooks and notes for students as a small chapter among Indian traditions. There were also published some translations from English into Russian famous textbooks on History of Indian Philosophy written by Indian authors like Chatterji's and Datta's The Introduction to Indian Philosophy and S. Radhakrishnan's Indian Philosophy in which chapters on Jainism were included and which still nowadays are used by students for the studying Indian Philosophy.
