FIFTEEN DAY AUTUMN SCHOOL
ON
JAIN PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION Held at Bhogilal Leherchand Institute of Indology, Delhi
In October 98, The Bhogilal Leherchand Institute has organised a 15 day Autumn School on Jain Philosophy and Religion. 35 very sincere and senior scholars from all over the country participated in the school as students and 12 eminent scholars delivered lectures. The purpose of holding this school is to unbroken tradition of Jain Philosophy and Religion and its contribution. Programme is uncomparable to any other any where in the country. The participants also expressed their keen desire that the Institute should run this programme every year regularly.
Sahu Ramesh Chandra, Executive Director - Times of India group presiding over the inaugural function of the school on 3 rd of Oct. 98 said, the fundamental principles of Indian philosophies and ideologies are basically one, which stand on truth, non-violence and the doctrine of karma. Other scholars and guests present also supported the views of the president, while expressing their ideas.
The Valedictory Function was held on Oct. 17.98. It was presided over by Prof. Vachaspati Upadhyay, Vice Chancellor, Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth. The chief guest was Shri K.P.A. Menon the audience that only a culture, religion and ethicsm that have an attitude of synthesis and respect for traditions and faiths other than its own, can be acceptable. The principles of non-violence, non-absolutism and voluntary limitation of one's needs and belongings will naturally be the most important elements of such a culture.
Thinkers, critics and writers like Prof. Namwar Singh, Prof. Satya Ranjan Banerjee of Calcutta University, Mr. R.V.V. Aiyyar, Secretary : Culture, Govt. of India Mr. S. Raghunathan, Commissioner (Transport), Govt. of Delhi etc., while expressing their views, also made two important suggestions : 1. It was suggested that this Institute should also hold Advanced Schools in
the field of Jain Philosophy and Religion. 2. This Institute should organise an all India School on Manuscriptology for
preservation and publication of the ancient and incredibly rich literary wealth of this country.
