________________ el. 2-4-63 પ્રબુદ્ધ જીવન ૨૦૫ પત્રમાંથી તારણું : Rare Combination of Total Honesty and Unusual Ability. I had great personal regard and esteem for Shri Chimanlal Chakubhai Shah as a lawyer and a solicitor. I had known him since 1944 when I joined the chambers of Sir Jamshedji Kanga. He had great legal acumen and had formidable knowledge of the law. It was a pleasure to work with him as an instructing solicitor, because his preparation of every case was so thorough and painstaking. I know that my senior, Sir Jamshedji Kanga, also held him in very high osteem. Chimanlal was an expert in the branch of the law pertaining to the press. He instructed me in a number of cases in the High Court and in the Supreme Court ani I enjoyed working with himn in all those matters. With his original mind he always liked to fall back on fuadamental principles rather than on mere case law. What I admired about Chimanlal most was his intellectual integrity and the courage of his convictions. He represented the rare combination of total honesty and unusual ability. During the Emergency he presided over a meeting which I addressed on the changes which were made in the Constitution of India, and I was struck by the tremendous courage he showed in expressing his views in a forthright manner. The last time I met him was at the beginning of the current year when he brought with him his grandson who is also in the legal profession--the third generation to join the prestigious solicitors' firm of Chimanlal Shah & Co. In the death of Chimanlal, the country has lost a great patriot, the free press has lost a great champion, and the legal profession has lost one of its most respected members. • He could always tolerate criticism, but was a vigorous champion of his own views. He was generous in his recognition of the contributions of others, but he never tolerated fools gladly. His criticism could be telling, forceful and on occasion would disarm his opponents and he would win over with his power of persuasion. His service to the nation, to the Jain community and to humanity at large will long be remembered. I had the privilege of working with him and against him, but in whatever sitution I was, I was always struck by his unfailing courtesy which as a junior was a source of great inspiration to ine. His death has deprived all of us of a noble and courageous soul, but he has left this world in much better shape than he found it. On behalf of the Bombay Incorporated Law Society and on my own behalf a prayer goes out to Almighty that the departed soul may rest in eteroak peace. JASHWANT P. THAKKAR President Bombay Incorporated Law Society: Lively Interest in Social work I had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Chimanbhai Shah, when I was practising at the Bar as well as from the Bench. He was an extremely intelligent Solicitor ard i sed his remarkable mind to help his clients. In fact, if a junior was briefed by Chimanbhai, it was regarded as a sign that he was a competent junior who bound to do well in future. He also took a very lively interest in doing social work and was the leading lights of the Bombay Jain Yuvak Sangh. He had the ability to put in simple language thoughts and ideas pertaining to religion, politics and philosopby and to bring them home to a common people. JUSTICE M. H. KANIA NANI A.
