________________ *40T/TMIS-FHAV888€ : 63 you have to cease to be a Bahirātman, and establish yourself as a Antarātma. In other words if you desire to achieve your Sadhya you have to be a Sadhaka and do Sadhanā. Bahirätman is that stage of Ātman which is materially inclined and happy, enjoying the sense pleasures, unaware of the consequences of the deeds which sometimes bind him with auspicious and sometimes with inauspicious karmas. Antarātman is that stage where the Ātman differentiate the self from the not-self, tries to give up attachment aversion, tries to conquer the passions, becomes equanimous and observes equanimity towards all creatures. In modern times, when there is a dearth of people possessing these qualities, its importance becomes all the more clear. Inspite of the heights of material progress that man has achieved, he is unhappy unsettled and in distress. So the former is one whose face is towards the world and the latter has his face towards himself. The third stage is that of the Parmātman where absolute consciousness, existence and bliss have manifested and is the Sādhya of the Sadhaka for which he undertakes Sadhanā. The Vratas, Samitis, Guptis, anuprekṣā, 12 fold nirjarā enable the soul to conquer the passsions, and destroy the karmas and this is a Herculean task for the beginner. In the words of J. Krishnamurthy. "At every step of it every day until the end discriminates between the real and the unreal. The body and the man are two and the man's will is not always that the body wishes. You will only what God wills, but you must dig deep down in to yourself to find the God within you. Do not mistake your bodies for yourself, neither the physical nor the astral nor the mental. You must know them all and know yourself as their master. The body is your animal -the horse upon which you ride., But it must always be you who control the body, not it that controls you. You must catch unceasingly or you will fail. You must study deeply the hidden laws of nature and when you know them, arrange your life accordingly using always reason and common sense." One of the striking features of the present age is that man is trying to know about everything in the universe, but is taking little interest to know the self who knows everything.
