ThefirstMandevaSooriexistedinthesecondcenturyAD.Theauthorofthe Tijayapahutta StotraisbelievedtobethisMandevaSoori.Hewasbornina Jainmerchant'shouseholdinatowncalledNadol. OnceamonkbythenameofPradyotanSooricametotown. Young MandevawenttohearthediscourseofPradyotanSooriandimmediatelyfeltthatheshouldrenounceeverythingandbecomeamonk.Afterafewyearshedidbecome amonkandstartedlearningscripturesanddoingpenance.Ashewasveryknowledgeable, hisgurumadehimachar ya.AtthetimeoftheceremonyhisgurusawthatthereweretwogoddessessittingontheshouldersofMandeva, Laks hmiononeshoulderandSaraswationtheother.
