Howeveraccordingtothe Jain Sahityano Itihasa'therewerewomonkswiththesamename. Theywere: (1) Mandeva-SoorioftheNivruttigacchawholivedduringthe 10thcentury. (2)Mandeva-SoorioftheBrahidgacchawholivedduringthe 11th Century. AccordingtoShvetambaraPattavali?,therewerethreeMandeva-Soori. ThefirstMandevaSooriexistedinthesecondcenturyAD.Theauthorofthe Tijayapahutta StotraisbelievedtobethisMandevaSoori.Hewasbornina Jainmerchant'shouseholdinatowncalledNadol. OnceamonkbythenameofPradyotanSooricametotown. Young MandevawenttohearthediscourseofPradyotanSooriandimmediatelyfeltthatheshouldrenounceeverythingandbecomeamonk.Afterafewyearshedidbecome amonkandstartedlearningscripturesanddoingpenance.Ashewasveryknowledgeable, hisgurumadehimachar ya.AtthetimeoftheceremonyhisgurusawthatthereweretwogoddessessittingontheshouldersofMandeva, Laks hmiononeshoulderandSaraswationtheother. Theguruwassomewhatdisturbedtoseethisbutthecleverdisciple MandevarealisedhisGuru'sfeelingsand,thereandthen, decidedtoperformstrictpenance.Inaddition, itsohappe nedthatfourgoddessesJaya, Vijaya, AparajitaandPadmawerealwayspresentwhereverMandevaSooriusedtostay. Thesegoddesseshavebeennamedinthissmarana. Duringthattime, Taxila(nowtheruinsof Taxilacanbeseenin Central Pakistan)wasaoneofthestrongholdsoftheBu ddhistsandJains. Some500Jaintemplesexistedinthatregion. Oncetherewasanoutbreakoftheplaguein Taxila. Allthepeopleofthetownwereindistress. Seeingtheminsuchastate,aShasanDevi(yakshini)cametothemandsaidthatthistownwillbetakenoverbythe 'Turks inthreeyearstime, butifyouwanttosavethepeople,gonowandfetchsomeholywaterafterwashingthefeetofMand eva-SooriwhoisnowinNadol. Thendoashesays, andleavethisplacetosettlesomewhereelse. OnemanbythenameofVeerdattawenttoNadolandmanagedtohaveaspecialstotracomposedtoeradicatethepl ague. Thestotraisknownasthe Shanti-stavaor Laghu-ShantiStotra.(Thisisnotonthelistofoursubject, the Ninesmaranas) Mandeva-Soorihasalsocomposedthe Tijayapahutta, whichweareexploringnow,andisNo.4inourlistofninerecitations. Taxilawasoverrunbythe Turksthreeyearsaftertheaboveevent.Theactualdateortheyearoftheaboveeventisunk nown, butaccordingtoPattavalithismusthavehappenedinthesecondcenturyAD Asperthehistoryofindia, Taxilahadalarge JainandBuddhistpopulation. Taxilaindeedwasoverrunbythe Muslimsintheeighth century.RuinsofaBuddhistuniversityandsomeJainshrinescanbeseenthere. Thisissometh irtymilesfromthecapitalofPakistan, Islamabad.
