श्र ेणि का प्रारम्भ मानते हैं वे चौथे आदि गुणस्थानवर्ती जीवों को उपशमश्रण का प्रारम्भक मानते हैं। क्योंकि उपशम सम्यक्त्व चौथे आदि चार गुणस्थानों में ही प्राप्त किया जाता है। लेकिन जो आचार्य चारित्रमोहनीय के उपशम से यानी उपराम चारित्र की प्राप्ति के लिये किये गये प्रयत्नी से उपर मानते हैं, वे सप्तमगुणस्थानवर्ती जीव को ही उपशम श्रेणि का प्रारम्भक मानते हैं, क्योंकि सातवें गुणस्थान में ही यथाप्रवृत्तकरण होता है ।"

Those who consider the fourth and higher Gunasthanas as the beginning of the Upshama Shreni, believe that the beings residing in these Gunasthanas are the initiators of Upshama Shreni. This is because the attainment of Samyaktva, which is a part of Upshama, is possible only in the fourth and higher Gunasthanas.
