[मनुष्यों, नारकों देवों और तिर्यक्वों का परस्पर अल्प-बहु आदि की ऊपर कहा गया है, उसे ठीक-ठीक समझने के लिये मनुष्य संख्याशास्त्रोक्त' रीति के अनुसार दिखायी जाती है ]:
मनुष्य, अक्षम्य उन्तीस अङ्क-प्रमाण और उत्कृष्ट, असंख्यात होते हैं।
( क ) जघन्यः – मनुष्यों के गर्भज और संमून्छिन, ये बो में हैं इनमें से संमूच्छिम मनुष्य किसी समय बिलकुल ही नहीं रहते, केवल गर्भन रहते हैं । इसका कारण यह है कि संमूमि मनुष्यों की आयु, अन्तर्मुहूतं प्रमाण होती है । जिस समय संमूमि मनुष्योंकी उत्पत्ति में एक अन्तर्मुहूर्त से अधिक समय का अन्तर पड़ जाता है, उस समय, पहले के उत्पन्न हुए सभी संमूच्छिम मनुष्य मर चुकते हैं। इस प्रकार नये संमूमि मनुष्यों की उत्पत्ति न होने के समय तथा पहले उत्पन्न हुए सभी संमूच्छिम मनुष्यों के मर चुकने पर, गर्भम मनुष्य ही रह जाते हैं, जो कम से कम नीचे-लिखे उन्तीस अजूों के बराबर होते हैं । इसलिये मनुष्यों की कम से कम यही संख्या हुई ।
