जाती है। क्योंकि इन दोनों प्रकृतियों ने बिना बन्ध के ही, अपने स्वरूप को प्राप्त करने के द्वारा अपनी विद्यमानता सिद्ध कर सत्ता प्राप्त की है।
इन बन्ध आदि स्थितियों वाले समस्त कमों का क्षणमात्र में ही भगवान महावीर ने क्षय नहीं किया था। किन्तु क्रमशः उनके क्षय द्वारा श्रेणी-अनुश्रेणी आत्मशक्तियों का क्रमिक विकास कर वे परमात्मा, सर्वज्ञ, सर्वदर्शी बने थे । यही आत्मशक्तियों के विकास का क्रम है और प्रत्येक आत्मा को इसके लिए अपने-अपने प्रयत्न करने पड़ते हैं।
जीव द्वारा अपने विकास के लिए किये जाने वाले प्रयत्नों द्वारा ज्ञान, दर्शन, चारित्र आदि की मोम से जाना विशेष यो गुणस्थान कहते हैं। अर्थात् गुण---ज्ञान, दर्शन, चारित्र आदि जीव का स्वभाव और स्थान- उनकी तरतमता से उपलब्ध स्वरूप को गुणस्थान कहते हैं।
ये स्वरूप-विशेष ज्ञान, दर्शन, चारित्र आदि गुणों की शुद्धि और अशुद्धि के तरतमभाव गे होते हैं। गुणों की शुद्धि और अशुद्धि में तरतमभाव होने का मुख्य कारण मोहनीयकर्म का उदय, उपशम, क्षय, क्षयोपशम आदि हैं । जब प्रतिरोधक कर्म कम हो जाता है, तब ज्ञान-दर्शनादि गुणों की शुद्धि अधिक प्रकट हो जाती है, और जब प्रतिरोधक कर्म की अधिकता होती है, तब ज्ञानादि गुणों की शुद्धि कम होती है । आत्मिक गुणों के इम न्यूनाधिक क्रमिक विकास की अवस्था को गुणस्थानक्रम कहते हैं। । यद्यपि शुद्धि और अशुद्धि से जन्य जीव के स्वरूप-विशेष असंख्य प्रकार के हो सकते हैं, तथापि उन सब स्वरूप-विशेषों का संक्षेप में चौदह गुणस्थानों के रूप में अन्तर्भाव हो जाता है । ये गुणस्थान मोक्षमहल को प्राप्त करने के लिए सोपान के समान हैं।
