( २५ ) असली स्वरूप दिखाई नहीं देता है। जैसे-जैसे आवरण शिथिन या नष्ट होते हैं बले वमे जसका असली स्वरूप प्रगट होता जाता है। जब
आवरणों की तीयतम स्थिति होती है तब आत्मा अविकसित दशा के निम्नतम स्तर पर होती है। यह आत्मा की निम्नतम स्तर की स्थिति ' है और जब आचरण विल्कुल नष्ट हो जाते हैं तब आरमा अपने शुद्ध स्वरूप की पूर्णता में स्थिर हो जाती है । जो उसका पूर्ण स्वभाव है। उच्चतम सर्वोच्च अप्रतिपाती स्थिति है। ____ आत्मा पर कर्मों के आवरण की तीवता जैसे-जैसे कम होती जाती है, वैसे-वैसे आत्मा अपनी प्राथमिक भूमिका को छोड़कर शनैः शनैः शुद्ध स्वरूप का लाभ करती हुई चरम उच्च भूमिका की ओर गमन करती है । इस गमनकालीन स्थिति में आत्मा अनेक प्रकार की उच्चनीच परिणामजन्य स्थितियों का अनुभव करती है, जिससे उत्थान की ओर अग्रसर होते हुए भी पुनः निम्न भूमिका पर भी आ पहुंचती है और पुनः उस निम्न भूमिका से अपने परिणाम-विशेषों से उत्थान की ओर अग्रसर होती है । यह क्रम चलता रहता है और अन्त में आत्मशक्ति की प्रबलता से उन स्थितियों को पार करते हुए चरम लःय को प्राप्त कर ही लेती है । प्रारम्भिक और अन्तिम तथा मध्य की संक्रांतिकालीन इन सब अवस्थाओं का वर्गीकरण करके उसके चौदह विभाग किये हैं, जो चौदह गुणस्थान कहलाते हैं।
गुणस्थान कम का आधार कर्मों में मोहकर्म प्रधान है अतः इसका आवरण प्रमुखतम है अर्थात् जब तक मोह बलवान और तीद है तब तक अन्य सभी कर्मावरण सबल और तीव्र बने रहते हैं और मोह के निर्बल होते ही अन्य आवरणों की स्थिति भी निर्बल बनती जाती है । इसलिए आत्मा के विकास में मुख्य बाधक मोह की प्रबलता और मुख्य सहायक मोह को निर्बलता
