जीवन गाथापर प्रकाश डालने वाले विदेशी लेखकोंने विशेष रूपसे प्रकट की है। जार्ज केटलिन तो गुजरात प्रान्त मात्रको जैनधर्म के प्रभावापन मानता हुआ उस वातावरणसे गांधी जी के जीवनको अनुप्राणित-सा अनुभव करता है । बाह्य वातावरणका जीवनपर गहरा असर होता ही है । अहिंसाके उच्च समाराधक होने के कारण ही मौराष्ट्र देशने भारतीय अहिंसात्मक संग्राममें महान भाग बटाया था।' कैटलिगका कथन है कि भारतमें मांसाहारके विरोध में गुजरातका सबसे प्रमुख स्थान है तथा बनधर्मका वहाँ जितना प्रभाव है, उतना भारतके अन्य भागोंमें नहीं है। 'महात्मा गांधी' नामक अंग्रेजो पुस्तकमें श्री पोलकने गांधीजीको जम्म-भूमि गुजरात में जैनयमके महान् प्रभावको स्वीकार किया है, जिससे गांधीजीके जीवनको समाधारण प्रकाश तथा बल प्राप्त हुभा । विद्वान् लेखक टाल्सटाय आदिके प्रभावको उतना महत्त्वपूर्ण नहीं मानता है । विलावत जाते समय जो गांधीजीने जन सन्त श्रीमद् राजचन्द्र भाईमे पद्य, मांस तथा परस्त्री सेवन त्यागकी प्रतिज्ञा ली थी और जिसके प्रभावसे गांधीजी के जीवन में अहिसात्मक उज्ज्वल क्रान्तिका जागरणा हुआ था, उनकी मार विश्व विरूपात लेखक रोम्यारोला' the thrce vows of ains-'जैनों की प्रतिमात्रयो' कहते है।
