प्रकृतियोंरूप परिणमन करता है। उक्तं च - "नानामिनोति इति नाम" जो नाना प्रकार से बनाता है वह नामकर्म है। अब गोत्र कर्म का कार्य कहते हैं -
संताणकमेणागयजीवावरणस्स गोदमिदि सपना । । ..
उच्चं णीचं चरणं, उच्चं णीचं हवे गोदं ॥१३॥ अर्थ – संतान क्रम से चले आये जीव के आचरण को गोत्र कहते हैं। उच्च व नीच आचरण से उच्च व नीच गोत्र होता है।
विशेषार्थ - "उच्च-नीचं गमयतीति गोत्रम्अर्थात् जो उच्च और नीच का आचरण कराता है उसे गोत्र कहते हैं। तथैव – 'गमयत्युच्च-नीचकुलमिति गोत्रम्' अर्थात् जो उच्च और नीच कुल का ज्ञान कराता है अथवा उच्च या नीच कुल को प्राप्त कराता है उसे गोत्र कहते हैं। "न च निष्फलं गोत्रम्, दीक्षायोग्यसाध्वाचाराणां साध्वाचारैः कृतसंबंधानां आर्यप्रत्ययाभिधानव्यवहारनिबन्धनानां पुरुषाणां सन्तान: उच्चैर्गोत्रं तत्रोत्पत्तिहेतुकर्माप्युच्चैर्गोत्रम् ।........ तद्विपरीतम् नीचैर्गोत्रम् ।" अर्थात् गोत्र कर्म निष्फल है, यह बात नहीं है क्योंकि जिनका दीक्षायोग्य साधु आचार है, साधु आचारवालों के साथ जिन्होंने सम्बन्ध स्थापित किया है तथा जो 'आर्य' इस प्रकार के ज्ञान और वचन व्यवहार के निमित्त हैं उन पुरुषों की परम्परा को उच्चगोत्र कहा जाता है तथा उनमें उत्पत्ति का कारणभूत कर्म भी उच्चगोत्र है।...... उससे विपरीत कर्म नीच गोत्र है।
कुल परम्परा के आचरण के विषय में एक कहावत भी है -
सियार के एक बच्चे को बचपन से ही सिंहनी ने पाला। वह सिंह के बच्चों के साथ ही खेला करता था। एक दिन खेलते हुए वे सभी बच्चे किसी जंगल में गये। वहाँ उन्होंने हाथियों का समूह देखा, देखकर जो सिंहनी के बच्चे थे वे हाथी के सामने हुए, किन्तु वह सियार जिसमें अपने कुल का डरपोकपने का संस्कार था हाथी को देखकर भागने लगा। तब वे सिंह के बच्चे भी अपना बड़ा भाई जानकर उसका अनुकरण करते हुए अपनी माता के पास लौट आये और उस सियार की शिकायत की कि इसने हमको शिकार से रोका तब सिंहनो ने उस सियार के बच्चे से एक श्लोक कहा, जो इस प्रकार
