गुणरान का निरुक्ति अर्थ १जेहिं बु सक्खिज्जते उदयादिसु संभवेहिं भावहिं ।
जीवा ते गुणसण्णा गिद्दिद्या सव्वदरसीहि ॥८॥ माथार्थ-कों की उदयादि प्रवस्थानों के होने पर उत्पन्न होने वाले जिन परिणामों से जोव लक्षित किये जाते हैं, उन्हें सर्वदशियों ने गुणस्थान इस संज्ञा से निदिष्ट किया है ।।८।।
विशेषार्थ- गाथा ३ में 'मोहजोगभवा' इन शब्दों के द्वारा गुणस्थानों की उत्पत्ति का कारण बतला दिया है। यहाँ भी 'उदयादि' शब्द द्वारा गुणास्थान सम्बन्धी परिणामों की उत्पत्ति का कारण बतलाया गया है । अर्थात मोहनीयकर्म के उदय से मिथ्यात्व और सासादन ये दो गुणस्थान होते हैं। दशनमोहनीयकर्म के क्षयोपशम से मिथ गुणस्थान होता है। (विशेष के लिए देखें गा. ११-१२ का विशेषार्थ) दर्शनमोहनीयकर्म एवं चारित्रमोहनीयकर्म की अनन्तानुबन्धी चतुष्क के उपशम या क्षयोपशम अथक करके चतुर्थगुसस्था हो है पत्याख्यानानकषाय के उदयाभाव से पंचम गुणस्थान होता है। प्रत्याख्यानावरणकषाय के उदयाभाव से ६ से १० तक पाँच गुणस्थान होते हैं। चारित्रमोहनीय कर्म के उपशम से ११वा तथा क्षय से १२वाँ गुणास्थान होता है। चार घातिया कमों के क्षय से १३-१४ वो गुणस्थान होता है, किन्तु १३३ गुणास्थान में शरीर-नामकर्मोदय के कारण योग है और शरीरनामकर्मोदय का अभाव हो जाने से १४वें गुगास्थान में योग भी नहीं होता । इस प्रकार इन १४ गुणस्थानों में १ से १२ तक दर्शनमोह और चारित्रमोह कर्म के उदय, उपशम, क्षयोपशम तथा क्षय से उत्पन्न होने वाले भावों के निमित्त से होते हैं। १३-१४वाँ गुणस्थान योग के सद्भाव और प्रभाव से होता है।
चार घातिया और चार अघातियाम्प-नाठ ऋर्मों के प्रकृति, स्थिति, अनुभाग और प्रदेश के बन्ध-उदय-सत्त्व का सम्पुर्णरूप से क्षय हो जाने पर मुक्तावस्था उत्पन्न होती है। यह अवस्था गुणस्थानातीत है, क्योंकि यहां कर्मों का सन्त्र ही नहीं रहा है।
गुगणस्थानों का निर्देश २मिच्छो सासरण मिस्सो, अधिरदसम्मो य देसविरदो य । विरमा पमत्त इदरो, अपुत्व अरिणयट्टि सुहमो य ॥६॥ ४उवसंत खोरणमोहो सजोगकेवलिजिरणो अजोगि य ।
५चौद्दस जीवसमासा कमेण सिद्धा य रणादम्वा ॥१०॥ गाथार्थ --मिथ्यात्व, सामादन, मिश्र, अविरतसम्यग्दृष्टि, देश विरत, प्रमत्तविरत, अप्रमत्तविरत, अपूर्वकरण संयत, अनिवत्तिकरणसंयत, सूक्ष्मसाम्परायसंयत, उपशान्तमोह, क्षीणमोह सयोगकेबली, अयोगकेवली ये क्रम से चौदह गुणस्थान होते हैं तथा सिद्धों को गुणस्थानातीत जानना चाहिए ।।६-१०।।
