गाथा १२ का अभाव है और वायु में गंध-रस और रूप इन तीनों का अभाव है। किन्तु बैशेषिक का ऐसा कहना युक्त नहीं है, क्योंकि इन चारों घातुओं के शरीर के निर्माण का कारण एक ही प्रकार के परमाण हैं, किन्तु परिणमन विशेष के कारण किसी में कोई गुण व्यक्त रहता है और कोई मुरण अव्यक्त रहता है । किसी में गन्ध गुण अव्यक्त रहता है, विसी में गन्ध और रस और किसो में गन्धरस और वर्ण ये तीन गुण अव्यक्त रहते हैं, जिसके कारण इन्द्रियों द्वारा उनका ग्रहण नहीं होता; किन्तु किसी भी परमाणु या धातु में पर्श-स-गंध-वर्ग इन चार गुणों में से किसी भी गुण का प्रभाव नहीं होता है । क्योंकि गुण का अभाव होने से परमाणु का विनाश हो जाएगा।
वैशेषिक मत को दृष्टि में रखते हाए यह गाथा रची गई है क्योंकि इस में मात्र पृथिवी आदि चार स्थावरों के शरीरों में स्पर्श-रस-गन्ध और वर्ण इन चारों गुणों का कथन किया गया है। उनमें से स्पर्श गुरुग पाठ प्रकार का है...मृदु, कर्कश (कठोर), गुरु (भारी), लघु (हल्का), शीत (ठंडा), उष्ण (गर्म), स्निग्ध (सच्चिाकण), रूक्ष । तिक्त, आम्ल, कटु (काड़वा), मधुर और कषायला के भेद से रस पंच प्रकार का है । सुगन्ध और दुर्गन्ध के भेद से गन्ध दो प्रकार की है। कृष्ण, नील, पीत, शुक्ल और लाल के भेद से वर्ण पाँच प्रकार का है। विसंयोगी त्रिसंयोगी आदि की अपेक्षा गुणों के संख्यात-असंख्यात भेद हो जाते हैं। लवण रस का मधुर रस में अन्तर्भाव हो जाता है। जलादि में गन्ध आदि अव्यक्त होने पर भी स्पर्शगुण के व्यक्त रूप सद्भाव के कारण उन गन्ध-प्रादि अव्यक्त गुरगों का भी वोध हो जाता है, क्योंकि स्पर्शगुण के साथ अन्य गुणों का अविनाभावी सम्बन्ध है, इसलिए स्पर्शगुण की प्रधानता है ।
