गाथा १६५ संशय और विपर्ययज्ञान के निर्णय आदि के करने में जो प्रवृत्ति होती है वह वृत्ति है। उस अपनोअपनी वृत्ति में वे रत हैं, अतः वे इन्द्रियाँ हैं।
शङ्का-जब इन्द्रियाँ अपने विषय में व्यापार नहीं करती हैं तब व्यापार-रहित अवस्था में उनको इन्द्रिय संज्ञा प्राप्त नहीं हो सकेगी ?
___ समाधान-ऐसा कहना ठीक नहीं है, क्योंकि रूद्धि के बल से ऐसी व्यापार-रहित अवस्था में भी उनमें इन्द्रियव्यवहार होता है। . . .
अथवा जो अपने अर्थ में निरत हैं, वे इन्द्रियाँ हैं। "अर्यते" अर्थात् जो निश्चित किया जावे वह अर्थ है। उस अपने विषयरूप अर्थ में जो व्यापार करती हैं वे इन्द्रियाँ हैं। अथवा, अपने-अपने स्वतंत्र विषय का स्वतंत्र आधिपत्य करने से वे इन्द्रियाँ कहलाती हैं।'
इन्द्रियों के भेद और उनका स्वरूप मदिन यदानोरूपनुअधिसुही सज्जबाही था।
भाविदियं तु दवं, देहुदयजयेहचिण्हं तु ॥१६॥ गाथार्थ-मतिज्ञानावरण कर्म के क्षयोपशम से उत्पन्न हुई विशुद्धि एवं उससे उत्पन्न हुग्रा ज्ञान भावेन्द्रिय है तथा शरीर नामकर्मोदय से शरीर में उत्पन्न हुए चिह्न द्रव्येन्द्रियाँ हैं ।।१६५॥
विशेषार्थ- इन्द्रियों के दो भेद हैं-भावेन्द्रिय और द्रव्येन्द्रिय । मतिज्ञानाबरण और वीर्यान्तरायकर्म के क्षयोपशम से प्रात्मा में विशुद्धि अर्थात अर्थ ग्रहण करने की शक्ति उत्पन्न होती है, उस अर्थ ग्रहण की शक्ति को लब्धि कहते हैं । लब्धि को योग्यता भी कहते हैं। उस विशुद्धि के द्वारा प्राने विद्ययभूत अर्थग्रहणरूप व्यापार उपयोग है। लब्धि और उपयोग ये दोनों भावेन्द्रियाँ हैं। चैतन्य की पर्याय भाव है और उस चैतन्य का लक्षण अथवा चिह्न भायेन्द्रियाँ हैं। जातिनामकर्मोदय सहित शरीरनामकर्मोदय से शरीर में स्पर्शनादि भावेन्द्रियों के चिह्नस्वरूप द्रव्येन्द्रियाँ हैं। पुद्गलद्रव्य की पर्यायरूप इन्द्रिय द्रव्येन्द्रिय है ।
शङ्का--द्रव्येन्द्रिय में पुद्गल का प्रयोग नहीं हुआ प्रतः द्रव्येन्द्रिय को पुद्गलद्रव्य को पर्याय क्यों कहा गया है ?
