आदिपुराणम्
वल्लीनां सकुसुमपल्लवाग्रभङ्गान् गुल्मौघानपि सरसां कडङ्गरांश्च । सुस्वादून मृदुविटपान् वनगुमाणां तद्यूथं कवलयति स्म धेनुकानाम् ॥१५६॥ कुलेषु प्रतनुतृणाङ्कुरान् प्रमृद्नन् वप्रान्तानपि रदनैः शनैर्विनिघ्नन् । वल्ल्यग्रग्रसनचणः फलेग्रहिः सन् व्यालोलः कलमगणश्चिरं विजह ॥१५॥ प्रत्यग्राः किसलयिनीहाण शाखा भग्ध्युच्चैर्वनगहनं निषीद कुन्जे । संभोग्यानुपसरसल्लकीवनान्तानित्येवं व्यहृत" वने करेणुवर्गः ॥१५॥ संभोगैर्वनमिति निर्विशन् यथेष्टं स्वातन्त्र्यान्मुहरपि'धूर्गतैर्निबद्धः । बद्धव्यः सहकलभः करेणुवर्गः संप्रापत् समुचितमात्मनो निवेशम् ॥१५९॥ वित्रस्तैरपथमुपाहृतस्तुरंगैः पर्यस्तो" रथ इह भग्नधूर्निरक्षः । एतास्ता द्रुतमपयान्त्यपेत्य मार्गाद् वारस्त्रीवहनपराश्च वेगसर्यः" ॥१६०॥ वित्रस्तः" करमनिरीक्षणाद् गजोऽयं भीरुत्वं प्रकटयति प्रधावमानः । "उत्त्रस्तात्पतति च बेसरादमुष्माद् विस्रस्तस्तनजघनांशुका पुरन्ध्री ॥१६॥ इत्युच्चैय॑तिवदतां' पृथग्जनानां संजल्पैः क्षुभितखरोष्ट्रकौक्षकैश्च । "ब्याक्रोशैर्जनितरवैश्च सैनिकानां संक्षोमः क्षणमभवञ्चमूषु राज्ञाम् ॥१६२॥
बच्चोंके साथ खानेके लिए शीघ्र ही वनके वृक्षोंकी ओर चली गयीं ॥१५५॥ वह हथिनियोंका समूह लताओंके पुष्पसहित नवीन पत्तोंके अग्रभागोंको, छोटे-छोटे पौधोंको, रसीले कडंगरि वृक्षोंको और वनके वृक्षोंकी स्वादिष्ट तथा कोमल शाखाओंको खा रहा था ॥१५६।। लतागृहोंमें पतली घासके अंकुरोंको खूदता हुआ खेतोंकी मेड़को अपने दाँतोंसे धीरे-धीरे तोड़ता हुआ, लताओंके अग्रभागके खानेमें चतुर तथा फलोंको तोड़ता हुआ वह चंचल हाथियोंके बच्चोंका समूह चिरकाल तक क्रीड़ा करता रहा था ॥१५७।। पत्तेवाली नवीन लताओंको ग्रहण कर, ऊँची-ऊँची शाखाओंसे युक्त सघन वनमें जा, लतागृहमें बैठ और खानेके योग्य सल्लकी वनोंके समीप जा इस प्रकार महावतोंको आज्ञासे वह हथिनियोंका समूह वनमें इधर-उधर विहार कर रहा था ॥१५८॥ इस प्रकार जो अनेक प्रकारकी क्रीड़ाओंके द्वारा वनका अपनी इच्छानुसार उपभोग कर रहा है, स्वतन्त्रतापूर्वक आगे चलनेसे महावत लोग जिसे रोक रहे हैं और जो बाँधनेके योग्य हैं ऐसा वह हथिनियोंका समूह बच्चोंके साथ अपने ठहरने योग्य स्थानपर जा पहुँचा॥१५९।। इधर हाथियोंसे डरे हुए इन घोड़ोंने यह रथ कुमार्गमें ले जाकर पटक दिया है, इसका धुरा और भौंरा टूट गया है तथा वेश्याओंको ले जानेमें तत्पर ये खच्चरियाँ अपना मार्ग छोड़कर बहुत शीघ्र भागी जा रही हैं ॥१६०॥ इधर यह ऊँट देखनेसे डरा हुआ हाथी दौड़ा जा रहा है और उससे अपना भीरुपना प्रकट कर रहा है तथा इधर जिसके स्तन और जघनपरका वस्त्र खिसक गया है ऐसी यह स्त्री डरे हुए खच्चरसे गिर रही है ॥१६१।। इस प्रकार जोर-जोरसे बोलते हुए साधारण पुरुषोंकी बातचीतके शब्दोंसे, क्षोभको प्राप्त हुए गधे, ऊँट तथा बैलोंके शब्दोंसे और परस्पर बुलानेसे उत्पन्न हुए सैनिकोंके कठोर शब्दोंसे राजाओंकी

The herd of elephants was devouring the buds of the creepers with their flowers, the small plants, the succulent **kadangara** trees, and the sweet and tender branches of the forest trees. (156)

The horses, frightened by the elephants, have overturned this chariot on the wrong path, its axle and wheel have broken, and these she-mules, eager to carry the courtesans, are fleeing very quickly, leaving their path. (160)

Thus, the words of ordinary men speaking loudly, the sounds of donkeys, camels, and bulls, agitated by the commotion, and the harsh words of the soldiers calling to each other, caused a moment of confusion among the kings' armies. (162)
