भारिपुराण
"यह आदिनाथ का चरित कवि परमेश्वर के द्वारा कही हुई गद्य-कथा के आधार से बनाया गया है, इसमें समस्त छन्द तथा अलंकारों के लक्षण हैं, इसमें सूक्ष्म अर्थ और गूढ़ पदों की रचना है, वर्णन की अपेक्षा अत्यन्त उत्कृष्ट है, समस्त शास्त्रों के उत्कृष्ट पदार्थों का साक्षात् कराने वाला है, अन्य काव्यों को तिरस्कृत करता है, श्रवण करने योग्य है, व्युत्पन्न बुद्धि वाले पुरुषों के द्वारा ग्रहण करने योग्य है, मिथ्या कवियों के गर्व को नष्ट करने वाला है और अत्यन्त सुन्दर है। इसे सिद्धान्त-ग्रन्थों की टीका करने वाले तथा चिरकाल तक शिष्यों का शासन करने वाले भगवान् जिनसेन ने कहा है। इसका अवशिष्ट भाग निर्मल बुद्धि वाले गुणभद्र सरि ने अति विस्तार भय से और हीन काल के अनुरोध से संक्षेप में संग्रहीत किया है।
___ आदिपुराण सुभाषितों का भण्डार है : इस विषय को स्पष्ट करने के लिए उत्तरपुराण में दो श्लोक बहुत ही सुन्दर मिलते हैं जिनका भाव इस प्रकार है :
"जिस प्रकार समुद्र से महामूल्य रत्नों की उत्पत्ति होती है, उसी प्रकार इस पुराण से सुभाषितरूपी रस्नों की उत्पत्ति होती है।"
"अन्य ग्रन्थों में जो बहुत समय तक कठिनाई से भी नहीं मिल सकते वे सुभाषित पद्य इस पुराण में पद-पद पर सुलभ हैं और इच्छानुसार संग्रहीत किये जा सकते हैं ।"3
आदिपुराण का माहात्म्य एक कवि के शब्दों में देखिए, कितना सुन्दर निरूपण है- "हे मित्र ! यदि तुम सारे कवियों की सूक्तियों को सुनकर सहृदय बनना चाहते हो, तो कविवर जिनसेनाचार्य के मुखकमल से कहे हए आदिपुराण को सुनने के लिए अपने कानों को समीप लाओ।""
समग्र महापुराण की प्रशंसा में एक विद्वान ने और कहा है:
"इस महापुराण में धर्म है, मुक्ति का पद है, कविता है। और तीर्थंकरों का चरित्र है, अथवा कवीन्द्र जिनसेनाचार्य के मुखारविन्द से निकले हुए वचन किन का मन नहीं हरते ?"५
इस पुराण को महापुराण क्यों कहते हैं ? इसका उत्तर स्वयं जिनसेनाचार्य देते हैं :
"यह ग्रन्थ अत्यन्त प्राचीन काल से प्रचलित है इसलिए पुराण कहलाता है, इसमें महापुराणों का वर्णन किया गया है अथवा तीर्थंकर आदि महापुरुषों ने इसका उपदेश दिया है अथवा इसके पढ़ने से महान् कल्याण की प्राप्ति होती है इसलिए इसे महापुराण कहते हैं।"
"प्राचीन कवियों के आश्रय से इसका प्रसार हुआ है, इसलिए इसकी पुराणता-प्राचीनता प्रसिद्ध है ही तथा इसकी महत्ता इसके माहात्म्य से ही प्रसिद्ध है इसलिए इसे महापुराण कहते हैं।"
"यह पुराण महापुरुषों से सम्बन्ध रखने वाला है तथा महान् अभ्युदय का स्वर्ग, मोक्षादि का कारण है इसलिए महर्षि लोग इसे महापुराण कहते हैं।" - "यह ग्रन्थ ऋषिप्रणीत होने के कारण आर्ष, सत्यार्थ का निरूपक होने से सक्त तथा धर्म का प्ररूपक होने से धर्मशास्त्र माना जाता है।"
१. उ०प०प्र०, श्लो० १७-२० । २. "यथा महायरलानां प्रसूतिर्मकरालयात् । तथैव सूक्तरत्नानां प्रभवोऽस्मात् पुराणतः ॥१६॥" ३. "सुदुर्लभं यदन्यत्र चिरादपि सुभाषितम् । सुलभं स्वरसंग्राह्य तदिहास्ति पदे पदे ॥२२॥"-उ०पु० ४. "यदि सकलकवीन्द्रप्रोक्तसूक्तप्रचारश्रवणसरसचेतास्तत्त्वमेवं सखे ! स्याः ।
कविवरजिनसेनाचार्यवक्त्रारविन्दप्रणिगवितपुराणाकर्णनाम्यर्णकर्णः ॥" ५. "धर्मोऽत्र मुक्तिपदमत्र कवित्वमत्र तीर्थशिनां चरितमत्र महापुराणे ।
यद्वा कवीन्द्रजिनसेनमुखारविन्वनिर्यद्वचांसि न मनांसि हरन्ति केवाम् ॥"

See the greatness of the Adi Purana in the words of a poet, how beautiful the description is - "O friend! If you want to become a connoisseur by listening to the sayings of all poets, then bring your ears close to hear the Adi Purana spoken from the lotus mouth of the great poet Jinsenacharya."

A scholar has also said in praise of the entire Mahapurana:

"In this Mahapurana there is religion, there is the path to liberation, there is poetry, and there is the character of the Tirthankaras, or whose mind is not captivated by the words that have come out of the lotus mouth of the poet Jinsenacharya?"

Why is this Purana called Mahapurana? Jinsenacharya himself answers:

"This text has been prevalent since ancient times, therefore it is called Purana, it describes the Mahapuranas or the great men like Tirthankaras have preached it, or by reading it one attains great welfare, therefore it is called Mahapurana."

"It has spread with the support of ancient poets, therefore its antiquity is well known, and its importance is known only from its greatness, therefore it is called Mahapurana."

"This Purana is related to great men and is the heaven of great progress, the cause of liberation etc., therefore the great sages call it Mahapurana." - "This text is considered to be a scripture because it is written by sages, it is strong because it describes the truth, and it is a scripture of religion because it is a model of religion."
