"इति-इह-आसीत् यहां ऐसा हुमा, ऐसी बनेक कथाओं का इसमें निरूपण होने से ऋषिगण इसे इतिहास, इतिवृत्त और ऐतिहासिक भी मानते हैं।"
पीठिकावन्ध में जिनसेन ने पूर्ववर्ती कवियों का स्मरण करने के पहले एक श्लोक कहा है जिसका भाष इस प्रकार है:
___ "मैं उन पुराण के रचने वाले कवियों को नमस्कार करता हूँ जिनके मुखकमल में सरस्वती साक्षात् निवास करती है तथा जिनके वचन अन्य कवियों की कविता में सूत्रपात का काम करते हैं।"
इससे यह सिद्ध होता है कि इनके पहले अन्य पुराणकार वर्तमान थे जिनमें इनकी परम आस्था थी। परन्तु वेकीन थे इसका उन्होंने स्पष्ट उल्लेख नहीं किया। हाँ, कवि परमेश्वर का अवश्य ही अपने निकटवर्ती अतीत में स्मरण किया है। एतावता विक्रान्तकौरव की प्रशस्ति के सातवें श्लोक में 'प्रथमम्' पद देखकर कितने ही महाशयों ने जो यह धारणा बना ली है कि आदिपुराण दिमम्बर जैन पुराणग्रन्थों में प्रथम पुराण है वह उचित नहीं मालूम होती । वहाँ 'प्रथमम्' का अर्थ श्रेष्ठ अथवा आद्य भी हो सकता है। गुनमाचार्य और उनके अन्य
जिनसेन और दशरथगुरु के शिष्य गुणभद्राचार्य भी अपने समय के बहुत बड़े विद्वान् हुए हैं। बाप उत्कृष्ट ज्ञान से युक्त, पक्षोपवासी, तपस्वी तथा भावसिंगी मुनिराज थे। इन्होंने आदिपुराण के अन्त के १६२० श्लोक रचकर उसे पूरा किया और उसके बाद उत्तरपुराण की रचना की जिसका परिमाण आठ इटार श्लोक प्रमाण है । ये अत्यन्त गुरुभक्त शिष्य थे।बादिपुराण के ४३३ पर्व के प्रारम्भ में जहाँ से अपनी रना शुरू करते हैं वहां इन्होंने जो पच लिखे हैं उनसे इनके गुरुभक्त हृदय का अच्छा साक्षात्कार हो जाता है। वे लिखते है कि:
"इनु' की तरह इस अन्य का पूर्वार्ध ही रसाबह है उसरार्ध में तो जिस किसी तरह ही रस की उत्पत्ति होगी।"
"यदि मेरे वचन सुस्वादु हों तो यह गुरुओं का ही माहात्म्य समझना चाहिए । यह वृक्षों का ही स्वभाव है कि उनके फल मीठे होते हैं।"
"मेरे हृदय से वचन निकलते हैं और हृदय में गुरुदेव विराजमान है अत: वे वहीं उनका संस्कार कर देंगे अतः मझे इस कार्य में कुछ भी परिश्रम नहीं होगा।"
"भगवान् जिनसेन के अनुगामी तो पुराण (पुराने) मार्ग के आलम्बन से संसार-समुद्र से पार होना चाहते हैं फिर मेरे लिए पुराण-सागर के पार पहुंचना क्या कठिन बात है ?"८
