"पृथ्वी चपटी है" इस बात को सिद्ध करने के लिए कुछ मनुष्यों ने वर्षों तक श्रम किया किन्तु बहुत कम लोगों ने ही "विलियम एडगल" जितना उत्साह दिखाया होगा।
विलयम एडगल ने ५० वर्ष तक इस विषय पर विचार किया। कितनी ही रातें तारागरणों को देखने में बिताई। बिस्तर पर आराम से सोया नहीं, कुर्सी पर बैठे-बैठे रातें बिताई।
उसने अपने बगीचे में उत्तर दिशा के ध्र व तारे की श्रेणी में लोहे का नल खड़ा किया था। वह नल ध्रुव तारे के सामने हो रहता। उत्साह पूर्वक इस अन्वेषण के पश्चात् उसने घोषित किया कि "पृथ्वी थाली के समान चपटी है और सूर्य पृथ्वी के चारों ओर प्रदक्षिरण करता है।" ध्र वतारा केवल ५००० मील दूर है ओर सूर्य का व्यास केवल १० मील है। the late William Edgell of Midsomer Norton, Somerset. Also he created still tube in his garden pointing towards the Pole star which was visible through it. This eccentric man evenqually evolved the theory of a flat, basin shaped earth with tha Sun moving north end south across it. He contented that the pole star was only 5000 miles away and that the sun was only 10 miles in diameter.
