૨૩૨ - સુવાસ : ભાદ્રપદ ૧૫
બીજા પ્રદેશમાં થતો પાક, જાતિમાં અને વિપુલતામાં સરખો હશે, પરંતુ રસ્તાઓને સુશોભિત કરનારાં વૃક્ષોની શ્રેણિ, ગામડાંઓની ચોતરફ આંબાઓની ઘટા, લીલાંછમ વિશાળ આંબલીવૃક્ષને ઘેર અસાધારણ સૌન્દર્યથી આ દેશને આચ્છાદિત-વિભૂષિત કરે છે. ખરેખર! આવા પ્રકારનું વિશિષ્ટ સૌન્દર્ય, પૃથ્વીના અન્ય પ્રદેશમાં મહારા જોવામાં આવ્યું નથી. જે મને કહેવાની તક મળે તે કહું કે-આ સિવાય ત્યાં વૈષયિક શાંતિ અને વાતાવરણ પ્રશાંત હોય છે. પ્રાતઃકાલમાં ફરવા જતાં અથવા ઠંડી ઋતુમાં સાંગે ઘોડા પર સ્વારી કરી જતાં રસ્તાઓ પર જે શાંતિ જણાય છે, તે યુરોપમાં સામાન્ય રીતે ખબર પણ નથી.
હને જણાવતા આનંદ થાય છે કેકમલેથી આચ્છાદિત-વિભૂષિત સરોવરનું અને સરોવરોને આચ્છાદિત કરતાં વટવૃક્ષનું દસ્ય આસપાસના બીજા પ્રદેશો કરતાં ઘણું મનોહર આનંદકારક લાગે છે. મંદ મંદ પવનની લહેરથી ડાલતી તથા બેઠેલા કાળા ભમરાઓથી કંપતી લાલ, સફેદ અને નીલવર્ણનાં સુંદર કમળોની જાતિ, અને કમલ–પત્રો પરથી ધીમે ધીમે પસાર થતી જલકૂકડીઓ, આ બધું અત્યંત રમણીય લાગે છે.
આ આલાદ-જનક પ્રદેશના એક ભાગ પર, સરોવરના તીર પર બોદર(વડોદરા)ની દીવાલેથી એક માઈલ દૂર અય્યારા તંબુ ઠોકવામાં આવ્યા હતા.” તેણે જોયેલાં કમલનું આકર્ષક આબેહૂબ દોરેલું મનોહર ચિત્ર, ઉપર્યુક્ત પુસ્તકમાં (પૃ. ૨૭૪-૨૭પ વચ્ચે) દર્શાવ્યું છે.
વડોદરાની અંદરના ભાગને ગરમ, ધૂળવાળો અને અસંતોષકારક જણાવ્યો છે, પરંતુ તટબંધી બહારના પ્રદેશને સુખાવહ તથા નૈસર્ગિક સૌન્દર્યમાં બીજો કોઈ સ્પર્ધા ન કરી શકે તે
1. "If I were to point out the most beautiful part of India I ever saw, I should fix upon the province of Guzarat. If I were to decide upon the most delightful part of that province, I should without hesitation prefer the purgunnas of Brodera and Nariad."
"The crops in the other districts may be equal in variety and abundance, but the number of trees which adorn the roads, the richness of the mango topes round the villages, the size and verdure of the tamarind trees clothe the country with uncommon beauty, such indeed as I never saw to so great an extent in any other part of the globe. There is, besides, a voluptuous stillness, if I may use the expression, in an Indian landscape, a serenity in the atmosphere and a quietness in the road during a morning walk or evening ride in the cool season, not generally known in Europe. I am almost tempted to say that the lotus-covered lakes and their ever-shadowing banian trees have a more cheerful and brilliant appearance than in the surrounding dise tricts, the sweet variety of the red, white and blue lotos, gently agitated by the breeze or moved by the spotted halcyon alighting on the stalks, with the rails and water hens lightly running over the foliage, are altogether lovely. Our tents were pitched in one of these delightful situations on the inargin of a lake, about a mile from the walls of Brodera.
