The object of the scriptures (agama) itself, and therefore its comprehension. From the observation of eclipses of the moon and sun, etc., the scriptural testimony is seen. 99

However, the comprehension of the transcendental (atindriya) object is through the scriptures (agama) itself. Because the knowledge of such objects is obtained from the scriptures. For example, the scriptures reveal that on certain days and at certain times, there will be an eclipse of the moon or the sun, etc. And the same scriptural statements are verified when the actual eclipses of the moon and sun (and other celestial phenomena) are observed at the predicted times. Thus, the scriptural statements are corroborated by direct perception, and there is no doubt about it.
This gross example shows that the transcendental object is the subject matter of the scriptures. However, one should understand that this example of lunar and solar eclipses refers to worldly (laukika) objects. Nevertheless, it is presented here as an analogy for the transcendental (alaukika) object, which is the self (atma).
The transcendental object, if it is incomprehensible to the senses, is still the subject matter of the scriptures (agama) - it is comprehended through them. Why? Because, just as the statements of experts on the subject of lunar and solar eclipses are authoritative, similarly, the statements of the enlightened beings (yogishvara) who have directly realized the nature of the self are authoritative on the transcendental subject of the self.
