Dotada: Asata Parinamamukta Bodha Asata
(299) The example of food mixed with poison is appropriate. Even if the food is delicious, if it is contaminated with poison, then the entire dish becomes poisonous and unpalatable, and one does not want to consume it. Similarly, for the Bhavabhimandi (one who delights in existence) jiva, even the scriptures and other knowledge, which are inherently beautiful, become impure, tainted, and undesirable due to their false and wrong self-transformations (asata parinamas). The entire knowledge becomes spoiled by the poison of these wrong transformations.
Therefore, it is clear from this that even if the Bhavabhimandi jiva is highly learned, possesses abundant scriptural knowledge, is an expert in the scriptures, is eloquent, and has mastery over the scriptures, yet due to their ignorant transformations being false (asata), and being permeated by false tendencies (mithya vasanas), they are truly ignorant, and all their knowledge becomes non-knowledge (abodha) for them. Even if they have varying degrees of subsidence-cum-destruction (ksayopasama) of karmas, since that is based on their tendency-filled bondage (vāsanāmaya bandha), and their knowledge is also tainted, that knowledge is essentially non-knowledge for them.
Further, it is also clear from this that as long as the tendency for false transformations (asata parinamas) exists, even the greatest scriptural knowledge becomes ignorance, and even the most extensive scriptural learning becomes incomplete. The scriptures have stated that even the scriptures studied by the inauspicious (abhavya) are unable to transform their nature, just as drinking sweetened milk does not make the snake (visha-dhara) non-venomous. This example of the inauspicious (abhavya) indicates that the inauspicious never relinquishes their beginningless false tendencies, never attains the knowledge of the distinction between self and non-self, and hence never attains liberation. Similarly, other beings, even the auspicious (bhavya), as long as they do not relinquish their beginningless false tendencies and do not attain the knowledge of the distinction between self and non-self, continue to wander in the cycle of rebirth, being ignorant.
