ત્રિવિધ તાપથી નિરંતર ખળી રહ્યો છે, એમ તે પ્રત્યક્ષ દેખે છે; આ લયાકુલ સંસાર સૉંસારમાં સત્ર ભય ભય ને ભય જ વ્યાપી રહેલ છે, એમ તેને જણાય છે. તે જુએ છે તે ભાગમાં × રાગના ભય છે, કુલને પડવાને ભય છે, લક્ષ્મીમાં રાજાના ભય છે, માનમાં દ્વીનતાનેા ભય છે, ખલમાં શત્રુને ભય છે, રૂપથી સ્ત્રીને ભય છે, શાસ્ત્રમાં વાદના ભય છે, ગુણમાં ખલને ભય છે, અને કાયા પર કાળના ભય છે. એમ સર્વ વસ્તુ તેને ભયવાળી દેખાય છે, માત્ર એક વૈરાગ્ય જ અભય છે,' એવું તેને પ્રતીત થાય છે. આમ આખા સ`સાર ભયાકુલ હાઇ કેવલ દુઃખરૂપ જ છે, સંસારમાં જે જે સુખસાધન મનાય છે તે પણ બધાય પરમાથી સુખાભાસરૂપ હાઇ દુઃખરૂપ જ છે, ઇંદ્ર-ચક્રવત્તી આદિની પદવી પણ દુઃખરૂપ જ છે, એમ તેના આત્મામાં નિશ્ચય થાય છે. કારણ કે

“ પ્રત્યેક વખત મૃત્યુના ભયવાળા, રાગના ભયવાળા, આજીવિકાના ભયવાળા, યશ હશે તેા તેની રક્ષાના ભયવાળા, અપયશ હશે તે તેને ટાળવાના ભયવાળા, લેણું હશે તે તેને લેવાના ભયવાળા, દેણું હશે તે તેની હાયવેાયના ભયવાળા, સ્ત્રી હશે તે તેની..........ના ભયવાળા, નહિ હોય તા તેને પ્રાપ્ત કરવાના ખ્યાલવાળા, પુત્ર-પુત્રાદિક હશે તેા તેની કડાકૂટના ભયવાળા, નહિં. ાય તે તેને મેળવવાના ખ્યાલવાળા, ઓછી ઋદ્ધિ હશે તે વધારેના ખ્યાલવાળા, વધારે હશે તે તેને ખાથ ભરવાના ખ્યાલના, એમ જ પ્રત્યેક સાધના માટે અનુભવ થશે. —શ્રીમદ્ રાજચ'દ્ર

એટલે તે મુમુક્ષુ પુરુષ ભાવે છે કે-હે જીવ! આ ભયરૂપ સ`સારમાં ચારે ગતિમાં ભ્રમણ કરતાં તુ અનંત દુઃખ પામ્યા છે. ભીષણ નરક ગતિમાં, તિય ચ ગતિમાં, કુદેવ ગતિમાં, ને કુમનુષ્ય ગતિમાં તું તીવ્ર દુ:ખને પ્રાપ્ત થયા છે, દારુણ અસહ્ય દુ:ખ વૈરાગ્યભાવના તે ચિરકાળ સહ્યા છે, શારીરિક માનસિક દુઃખ તે વારવાર અનુભવ્યા છે. હે જીવ! અશુચિ બીભત્સ ને મલમલિન એવા અનેક જનનીઓના ગર્ભાવાસમાં તું ચિરકાળ વસ્યા છે. સમુદ્રના પાણી કરતાં પણ વધારે માતાના ધાવણુ તું ધાવ્યા છે. તારા મરણુસમયે સાગરજલ કરતાં પણ વધારે આંસુડા તારી માતાએએ સાર્યાં છે. મેરુપર્યંત કરતાં પણ વધારે તારા કેશ-નખ વગેરે કપાયા છે. હું જીવ ! આ
