________________ આદર્શ મુનિ. 5 19 મથુરાના લેખ તથા અન્ય સ્મારક જેનોના ઈતિહાસ માટે ઘણજ ઉપયોગી છે. આ વિષય ઉપર સર વિન્સેન્ટ સ્મિથનાં વચનો પ્રકાશ પાડે છે. તે કહે છે કે - The discoveries have, to a very large extent, supplied corroboration to the written Jain tradition and they offer tangible and incontrovertible proof of the antiquity of the Jain religion, and of its early existence very much in its present form. The series of twenty four pontiffs (Tirthankars) each with his distinctive emblem was evidently firmly believed in, at the beginning of the Christian era." Farther "The inscriptions are replete with information as to the organization of the Jain church in sections known as Gana, Kula and Sakha, and supply excellent illustrations of the Jain books. Both inscription and sculptures give intersting details proving the existence of Jain nuns and influential position in the Jain church occupied by women. " અર્થાત–“આ શે ળેથી જૈનના ગ્રંથના હેવાલનું ઘણું સારી રીતે સમર્થન થયું છે. તથા જૈનધર્મની પ્રાચીનતા તેમજ તેને ઘણું પ્રાચીન કાળમાં પણ તે આજની માફક પ્રચલિત હોવાનું સુંદર તથા અબાધિત પ્રમાણ છે. ઇસુની સદીના પ્રારંભ કાળમાં પણ ચોવીસ તીર્થકરોને તેમનાં ચિહનો 1 Jain Stupa and othea antiquities of Mathura.
