INTRODUCTION Manuscript Description The Manuscript, which we utilised, of Vamadhvaja's Sanketa Commentary on Udayanacarya's Nyayakusumanjali belongs to Sanghavi Pada Bhandara, now it is preserved in Shri Hemacandracarya Jnana-mandira, Patan (Gujarat)'. It is a palm-leaf manuscript. It is not in good condition. It is damaged. At places filaments of the uppermost layer of palm-leaves are curled, detached, severed and lost. Hence letters written on them are also lost. It bears No. 191(2). Its size : 40 x 6.5 cms. It has 155 folios. Each side of a folio has 6 or 7 lines, and each line has 70 to 73 letters. The manuscript is very currupt. The colophon yields the following information: The copyist who wrote this plam-leaf manuscript was Thakkura Sri Madhava of Karnakula. He was a resident of Causa, Tirabhukti. He wrote this manuscript for the study of Upadhyaya Mahadeva, a son of Mahamahopadhyaya Misra Sulapani who too was a resident of Causanagara which was then under the rule of the king Yuvarajadeva. He completed the writing of the manuscript on Sunday, the fourth day of the white half of the month of Bhadra of the year 1312 of Vikrama Era. 1. There is an old tradition among the Jaina community to employ Maithila pundits to teach Jaina monks Nyaya. And Jaina monks too respectfully acknowledged the help they received from their Maithila pundit teachers. As for example, Vacaka Gunaratnagani (16th century A.D.), in his Tarkatarangini, a subcommentary on Govardhana's Tarkaprakasika which is itself a commentary on Kesva Misra's Tarkabhasa, writes : 14-KRU f oarfem ar hur 2104144 (p. 166 of the edition published by L. D. Institute of Indology, Ahmedabad). So the Maithila pundits come to Gujarat and even settle in Gujarat.
