________________ Vamadhvaja, the Author Vamadhvaja or Vamesvaradhvaja was a highly learned scholar. He was wellversed in the systems of Indian philosophy. His spiritual teacher (guru) was Virupaksa. He was paramapasupatacarya." He calls himself muni. As the manuscript of his commentary is written by the copyist in Vikrama Samvat 1312 (1256 A.D.), we may safely say that he composed the commentary at least 60 years earlier than the date of the manuscript, that is, in about 1196 A.D. And as the manuscript is written in Causanagar in Tirabhukti we may conclude that he belonged to Mithila. Vamadhvaja's Commentary on Nyayakusumanjali (NKu) Udayanacarya composed Laksanavali in Saka Samvat 906 (984 A.D.). So we can safely say that the date of the composition of NKu is c. 990 A.D. In Nku Udayana, having refuted strongly arguments adduced against the existence of God by opponents, logically establishes His existence. In the course of his tirade against atheists like Sankhya, Bauddha, Mimamsaka, etc., he refutes their other philosophical ideas and theories too. His NKu is pregnant with far-reaching implications and hidden significance. Hence it requires good illuminating commentaries to bring out deeper meaning and hidden significance of the text of NKu. Vamadhvaja's Sanketa commentary to a great extent fulfils this requirement. Let us see how Vamadhvaja himself evaluates his own commentary on Nku. He considers it to be an exposition glowing with the light of great signification. It is charming to the reasoning faculty. It unfolds the tough knots of very hard text. It is adored by the learned. We agree with Vamadhvaja. His commentary explains knotty points lucidly. It evinces deep study and understanding of Nyaya system.
