श्री सूत्रकृताङ्ग सूत्रम् मद ही नहीं किंतु जो संसार को पार करने की अभिकांक्षा लिये हो, वह अन्य प्रकार के मदस्थानों का सेवन न करे-अन्य प्रकार के गर्व या अभिमान भी न करे । सूत्रकार इसी का दिग्दर्शन कराते हुए कहते हैं-बुद्धि तीक्ष्ण होने से जो मद होता है उसे प्रज्ञामद कहते हैं । साधु प्रज्ञामद एवं तपोमद का अपनयन करे-उन्हें मिटा दे । अर्थात् मैं ही शास्त्र के अर्थ-रहस्य का यथावत वेत्ता हूं । मैं ही उत्कृष्ट तपश्चरण विधायी हूं । तप से कभी ग्लान-परिश्रान्त या खिन्न नहीं होता, साधु ऐसा गर्व न करे तथा मैं इक्ष्वाकुवंश हरिवंश आदि उत्तम गौत्रों में सम्भूत हूं-पैदा पुआ हूं । इस प्रकार गौत्रमद का भी वह उच्छेद करे । जिसके द्वारा प्राणी जीवित रहते हैंजीवन निर्वाह करते हैं उसे आजीव कहा जाता है । वह अर्थनिचय-पदार्थ समुच्चय है-जीवनोपयोगी उपकरण एवं साधन है । साधु उनका भी मद न करे । यहां प्रयुक्त 'च' शब्द से सूचित अन्य मदों का भी साधु परिहार करे । मदों का परित्याग करने से ही वह पंडित-तत्त्ववेत्ता होता है । वह समस्त मदों का अपनोदक-परिहार कारी या परित्यागी पवित्रात्मा होता है । यहां पुद्गल शब्द प्रधानवाची है । इसका यह अभिप्राय है कि वही पुरुष उत्तमोत्तम-सर्वोत्तम-महान से भी महान होता है ।
एयाइं मयाइं विगिंच धीरा, ण ताणि सेवंति सुधीरधम्मा । ते सव्वगोत्तावगया महेसी, उच्चं अगोत्तं च गतिं वयंति ॥१६॥ छाया - एतान् मदान् पृथक्कुQर्धीराः, न तान् सेवन्ते सुधीरधर्माणः ।
ते सर्वगोत्रापगता महर्षिण, उच्चामगौत्राञ्च गतिं ब्रजन्ति ॥ अनुवाद - धीर पुरुष इन पूर्व प्रतिपादित मदस्थानों को पृथक् करे-अपने से दूर रखे । सुधीर धर्माज्ञानदर्शन एवं चारित्र सम्पन्न धर्माचरणशील पुरुष गौत्रादिका अभिमान नहीं करते । वे सब प्रकार के गौत्रों से अपगत-अतीत महर्षि-महासत्त्व या महापुरुष सर्वोत्तम गति-मोक्ष को स्वायत्त करते हैं। .
टीका - साम्प्रतं मदस्थानानामकरणीयत्वमुपदोरपसंजिहीर्षुराह-'एतानि' प्रज्ञादीनि मदस्थानानि संसारकारणत्वेन सम्यक्परिज्ञाय 'विगिंच' त्ति पृथक्कुर्यादात्मनोऽपनयेदितियावत्, धी:-बुद्धिस्तया राजन्त इति धीराविदितवेद्या नैतानि जात्यादीनि मदस्थानानि सेवन्ति-अनुतिष्ठन्ति, के एते ?-ये सुधीरः सुप्रतिष्ठितो धर्म:श्रुतचारित्राख्यो येषां ते सुधीरधर्माणः, ते चैवंभूताः परित्यक्त सर्वमदस्थाना महर्षयस्तपोविशेषशोषित कल्पषाः सर्वस्मादुच्चैर्गोत्रादेरपगता:गौत्रापगता:सन्त उच्चांमोक्षाख्यां सर्वोत्तमां वा गतिं ब्रजन्ति-गच्छन्ति, चशब्दात्पञ्चमहाविमानेषु कल्पातीतेषु वा ब्रजन्ति, अगोत्रोपलक्षणाच्चान्यदपि नामकर्मायुष्कादिकं तत्र न विद्यत इति द्रष्टव्यम् ॥१६॥ किञ्च -
टीकार्थ - मद स्थानों की अकरणीयता को उपदर्शित कर-आख्यात कर अब सूत्रकार इस विषय का उपसंहार करते हुए कहते हैं-प्रज्ञा आदि के मद संसार के कारण हैं यह भलीभांति परिज्ञात कर साधु उनका अपने से अपनयन करे-उन्हें हटाये । जो धी:-बुद्धि द्वारा शोभित होते हैं उन्हें धीर कहा जाता है । वैसे धीरविदित वेद्य-जिन्होंने जानने योग्य तत्त्वों को जाना है । वे जाति आदि मद स्थानों का सेवन नहीं करते-तन्मूलक गर्व नहीं करते । वे कौन है ? कैसे है ? इसका समाधान करते हुए कहते हैं जिनके जीवन में श्रुत एवं चारित्रमूलक धर्म सुप्रतिष्ठित हैं-सम्यक् व्याप्त है, वे पुरुष अभिमान नहीं करते । इस प्रकार जिन्होंने समस्त मद स्थानों
