एकादशं श्रीमागाध्ययन कयरे मग्गे अक्खाए, माहणेणं मईमत्ता ? । जं मग्गं उज्जु पावित्ता, ओहं तरति दुत्तरं ॥१॥ छाया - कतरो मार्ग आख्यातो माहनेन मतिमता । .
यं मार्गमजुं प्राप्य, ओघं तरति दुस्तरम् ॥ अनुवाद - मतिमान-सर्वज्ञाता, महाण-अहिंसा के उपदेष्टा भगवान महावीर ने मोक्ष का कौन सा सरल मार्ग बतलाया है जिसे प्राप्त कर प्राणी दुस्तर-कठिनाई से पार किये जा सकने योग्य संसार सागर को लांघ सकता है।
टीका - विचित्रत्वात्रिकालविषयत्वाच्च सूत्रस्यागामुकं प्रच्छकमाश्रित्य सूत्रमिदं प्रवृत्तम्, अतो जम्बूस्वामी सुधर्मस्वामिनमिदमाह, तद्यथा-'कतरः' किंभूतो 'मार्गः' अपवर्गावाप्तिसमर्थोऽस्यां त्रिलोक्याम् 'आख्यातः'प्रतिपादितो भगवता त्रैलोक्योद्धरणसमर्थेनैकान्तहितैषिणा मा हनेत्येवमुपदेशप्रवृत्तिर्यस्यासौ माहन:-तीर्थकृत्तेन, तमेव विशिनष्टिमति:-लोकालोकान्तर्गतसूक्ष्मव्यवहितविप्रकृष्टाती तानागतवर्तमानपदार्थाविर्भाविका केवल ज्ञानाख्या यस्यास्त्यसौ मतिमांस्तेन, यं प्रशस्तंभावमार्ग मोक्षगमनं प्रति 'ऋजु' प्रगुणं यथावस्थितपदार्थस्वरूपनिरूपणद्वारेणावळं सामान्य विशेषनित्यानित्यादिस्याद्वादसमाश्रयणात्, तदेवंभूतं मार्ग ज्ञानदर्शन तपश्चारित्रात्मकं प्राप्य' लब्ध्वा संसारोदर विवरवर्ती प्राणी समग्रसामग्रीकः 'ओघ' मिति भवौघं संसारसमुद्रं तरत्यन्तन्तदुस्तरं तदुत्तरणसामग्रया एव दुष्प्रापत्वात्, तदुक्तम् -
माणुस्सखेत्तजाईकुलरुवारोगमाउयं बुद्धी । सवणोग्गहसद्धासञ्जमो य लोयंमि दुलहाई ॥१॥ छाया-मनुष्यं क्षेत्रं जाति: कुलं रुपमारोग्यमायुः बुद्धि श्रवणमवग्रह श्रद्धा संयमश्च लोके दुर्लभानि इत्यादि।॥१॥
टीकार्थ – सूत्र की रचना में अपनी विचित्रता-विशेषता होती है । वह वर्तमान, भूत, भविष्य-तीनों कालों को दृष्टि में रखकर की जाती है । अतएव आगामी काल के प्रच्छक-प्रश्न कर्ता को आश्रित कर इस सूत्र की रचना हुई है । जम्बू स्वामी श्री सुधर्मा स्वामी से प्रश्न करते हैं कि भगवन् ! तीनों लोकों का उद्धार करने में सक्षम, सबका एकान्त रूप से हित चाहने वाले, किसी भी प्राणी को मत मारो ! ऐसा उपदेश देने वाले, तीर्थंकर भगवान महावीर ने ऐसा कौनसा मार्ग बताया है, जो त्रैलोक्य-तीनों लोकों में अपवर्ग-मोक्ष प्राप्त कराने में समर्थ है । भगवान की विशेषताएं बतलाते हुए कहते हैं-वे मतिमान-महान् प्रज्ञाशील थे । मति उसे कहा जाता है जो लोक एवं अलोक में विद्यमान सूक्ष्म, व्यवहित-व्यवधानयुक्त, विप्रकृष्ट-दूरवर्ती अतीत-भूत, अनागत-भविष्य और वर्तमान के सभी पदार्थों को प्रकाशित करती है । वह केवलज्ञान या सर्वज्ञत्व रूप है। वह भगवान में विद्यमान है अतः भगवान मतिमान है । उन द्वारा निरूपित मोक्ष मार्ग प्रशस्त भाव मार्ग है । वह वस्तु तत्व का यथार्थ स्वरूप बतलाता है । अतएव मोक्ष प्राप्ति का अवक्र-वक्रता रहित या सरलमार्ग है। वस्तु के सामान्य विशेषात्मक तथा नित्य नित्यात्म स्वरूप को प्रतिपादित करते हुए स्याद्वाद का आश्रय लेने के कारण वह मार्गवक्र-टेढा न होकर ऋजु-सरल है । वह सम्यक् दर्शन सम्यक् ज्ञान तथा सम्यक् चारित्र रूप है । उसे प्राप्त कर संसार के उदर-विवर में वर्तनशील-संसार के उदर की गुफा में-संसार के अन्तर्गत विद्यमान

The wise and omniscient Mahaan, the teacher of non-violence, the Lord Mahavira, has revealed what is the simple path to liberation. By attaining this path, a being can cross the ocean of the world, which is difficult to cross.

This Sutra is initiated by a questioner from the future, due to the unique and timeless nature of the Sutra. Therefore, Jambuswami asks Sudharmaswami, "What kind of path is this, which is capable of attaining liberation in this three-world realm? What path is declared by the Lord, who is capable of liberating the three worlds, who is the ultimate well-wisher, who teaches non-violence?" He is the Mahaan, the Tirthankara. The one who knows all, the one who has the knowledge of the subtle, the obstructed, the distant, the past, the present, and the future, the one who illuminates all things in the world and beyond, is the wise one.
