श्री समाध्ययनं आरंभ-सावध कर्म में संलग्न हैं निरनुकंप-अनुकम्पा रहित है, ऐसे कार्य द्वारा द्रव्य का संग्रह करता है अथवा द्रव्य संग्रह हेतु कर्मों का निचय-संचय करता है, कर्म बांधता है वह प्राणियों के साथ शत्रुत्त्व के कारण तथा पाप संचय के कारण इस भव से च्युत होकर-मरकर जन्मांतर को प्राप्त होकर नर्क आदि में उत्पन्न होकर घोर यातना झेलता है । इसलिये मेधावी, विवेकवान्, मर्यादावान, सम्पूर्ण समाधिगुण वेत्ता साधु श्रुत तथा चारित्रमूलक धर्म की समीक्षा, आलोचना, चिन्तन, विमर्श कर उसे स्वीकार करे। वह बाहरी और भीतरी आसक्तियों का त्याग कर मोक्ष प्राप्ति के एकमात्र हेतु संयम का आचरण करे। वह स्त्री तथा आरम्भ-हिंसा आदि से विप्रमुक्तअत्यन्त विमुक्त सर्वथा पृथक् होकर अनिश्चित भाव-अनासक्ति पूर्वक विचरण करे।
आयं ण कुज्जा इह जीवियट्टी, असज्जमाणो य परिव्वएज्जा । णिसम्मभासी य विणीय गिद्धिं, हिंसन्नियं वा ण कहं करेजा ॥१०॥ छाया - आयं न कुर्य्यादिह जीवितार्थी, असजमानश्च परिव्रजेत् ।
निशम्यभाषी च विनीय गृद्धिं हिंसान्वितां ना न कथां कुर्यात् ॥ अनुवाद - साधु इस संसार में जीवितार्थी चिरकाल तक जीने की इच्छा करते हुए द्रव्य का अर्जन न करे । वह आसक्ति से दूर रहता हुआ संयम में प्रवृत्त रहे । वह सुनकर, विचारकर संभाषण करे । शब्दादि विषयों में लोलुप न रहता हुआ हिंसान्वित-हिंसामूलक कथा न करे वैसा - आलाप संलाप ने करे ।
टीका - किञ्चान्यत-आगच्छतीत्यायो-द्रव्यादेर्लाभस्तन्निमित्तापादितोऽष्टप्रकारकर्मलाभो वा तम् 'इह' अस्मिन् संसारे 'असंयम जीवितार्थी' भोगप्रधानजीवितार्थीत्यर्थः, यदिवा-आजीविकाभयात् द्रव्यसञ्चयं न कुर्यात्, पाठान्तरं वा छन्दणं कुज्जा इत्यादि, छन्दः-प्रार्थनाऽभिलाष इन्द्रियाणां स्वविषयाभिलाषो वा तत् न कर्यात् तथा 'असजमानः' सङ्गमकुर्वन गृहपुत्र-कलत्रादिषु 'परिव्रजेत्' उद्युक्त बिहारी भवेत् तथा 'गृद्धिं' गायं विषयेषु शब्दादिषु विनीय' अपनाय 'निशम्य' अवगम्य पूर्वोत्तरेण पर्यालोच्य भाषको भवेत्, तदेव दर्शयति-हिंसयाप्राण्युपमर्दरुपया अन्वितां युक्तां कथां न कुर्यात्, न तत् ब्रूयात् यत्परात्मनोः उभयोर्वा बाधकं वच इति भावः तद्यथा-अनीत पिवत खादत मोदत हत छिन्त प्रहरत पचतेत्यादिकथां पापोपादानभूतां न कुर्यादिति ॥१०॥
टीकार्थ - जो आता है, मिलता है, उसे आय कहा जाता है । यहाँ आय शब्द द्रव्य लाभ के अर्थ में है अथवा द्रव्य लाभ के सन्दर्भ में जो अष्टविध कर्मों की प्राप्ति होती है, उसे आय कहा जाता है । साधु इस लोक में संयममय जीवन की अभिलाषा से अथवा भोगमय जीवन जीने की कामना से आय-द्रव्य संग्रह न करे अथवा वह आजीविका के भय से-जीवन निर्वाह कैसे हो पायेगा इस आशंका से द्रव्य-धन संचित न करे । अथवा 'छंदणं कुज्जा' पाठान्तर के अनुसार साधु इन्द्रिय विषय के भोग की कामना न करे । घर, पुत्र स्त्रि आदि में अनासक्त रहता हआ विहरण करे । वह शब्दादि भोगों से आसक्ति या लोलपता मिटाकर आगे पीछे का चिंनत कर भाषण करे । सूत्रकार इसका दिग्दर्शन कराते हुए कहते हैं-साधु प्राणियों के उपमर्दनव्यापादन मूलक हिंसा से युक्त कथा न करे तथा वह ऐसा वचन न बोले जो अपने तथा औरों के लिये दुः खोत्पादक हो । तथा अशन करो, पान करो, भोजन करो, प्रमोद करो, मारो, काटो, प्रहार करो, पकाओ इत्यादि के रूप में पापजनक कथा - आलाप संलाप न करे ।
