सर्वत्रोतोऽनुयायिना वैतरणीजलेन नष्टसंज्ञा अपि सुतरां ' स्मृतया विप्रहीणा' अपगतकर्तव्यविवेकाभवन्ति, अन्ये पुनर्नरकपालानारकैः क्रीडतस्तान्नष्टांस्त्रिशूलिकाभिः शूलाभिः 'दीर्घिकाभिः ' आयताभिर्विघ्वा अधोभूमौ कुर्व ॥९॥ अपिच

टीकार्थ वैतरणी नदी के अत्यन्त खारे, उष्ण और दुर्गन्ध युक्त पानी से तपे हुये दु:खित बेचारे नारकीय प्राणी उस नदी में चलायी जाती लोहे के तीखे कीलों से युक्त-कांटों से युक्त नौका पर आने लगते हैं, तो पहले से ही उन नौकाओं पर बैठे हुये नारक देव उन प्राणियों के गले में तीखे कीले चुभोते हैं । वे नरकगत प्राणी कल-कल शब्द के साथ बहती हुई वैतरणी के जल से संज्ञाहीन होते ही है, फिर तीखे काँटों से पीड़ा पाते हुये और अधिक स्मृति शून्य हो जाते हैं । उन्हें अपने कर्त्तव्य का जरा भी ज्ञान नहीं रहता । दूसरे नरक पाल-नारक देव नरकगत जीवों के साथ क्रीड़ा करते हुए उन संज्ञारहित अभागे जीवों को लम्बे लम्बे शूलों- त्रिशूलों में पिरोकर जमीन पर पछाड़ देते हैं ।
केसिं च बंधितु गले सिलाओ, उदगंसि बोलंति मनलयंसि । कलुंबुयावालुय मुम्मुरे य लोलंति पच्चंति अ तत्थ अन्ने ॥१०॥ केषां च बद्ध्वा गले शिलाः, उदके मज्जयन्ति महालये । कलम्बुकाबालुकायां मुर्मुरे च लोलयन्ति पचति च तत्राऽन्ये ॥

अनुवाद नरक पर कई नरकपाल किन्हीं नरकगत प्राणियों के गले में पत्थर की शिला बाँधकर उन्हें अगाध जल में डूबो देते हैं । तथा कई अन्य नरकपाल अत्यन्त परितप्त गर्म बालू में तथा तुषाग्नि में उन नरक के प्राणियों को इधर उधर घसीटते हैं, रगड़ते हैं, या पकाते हैं ।
टीका – केषांचिन्नारकाणां परमाधार्मिका महतीं शिलां गले बद्ध्वा महत्युदके 'बोलंति' त्ति, निमज्जयन्ति, पुस्ततः समाकृष्य वैतरणीनद्याः कलम्बुकावालुकायां मुर्मुराग्नै च 'लोलयन्ति' अतितप्तवालुकायां चणकानिव समन्ततो घोलयन्ति, तथा अन्ये 'तत्र' नरकावासे स्वकर्मपाशावपाशितान्नकारन् सुण्ठके प्रोतकमांसपेशीवत् 'पचन्ति' भर्जयन्तीति ॥ १० ॥ तथा -

टीकार्थ नारक देव किन्हीं नरकगत जीवों के गले में बड़ी-बड़ी पाषाण शिलायें बाँध देते हैं और उन्हें अगाध जल में निमज्जित कर देते हैं, डुबो देते हैं, फिर वे उनको वहाँ से खींच लेते हैं, और परितप्तउष्णता से लाल बनी बालू में, तुषाग्नि में डालकर घिसते हैं, रगड़ते हैं। बहुत तपी हुई बालू में चनों की भूंजने की ज्यों इधर उधर घुमाते हैं । अन्य परमाधार्मिक देव अपने कर्मों के जाल में ग्रस्त उन नरकगत जीवों को शूल में पिरोकर पकाये जाने वाले मांस की तरह पकाते हैं ।

**Verse 9:**

Those who follow the path of the *sarvatra-oto* (all-pervading) are destroyed by the waters of the *Vaitarani* (river of hell). Even those who have lost their senses are quickly deprived of their memories and lose their ability to discern their duties. Others are tormented by the *naraka-pala* (hell guardians) who play with them, piercing them with tridents, spears, and long rods, and then throw them down to the earth below.

The *naraka-deva* (hell gods) who are already on these boats pierce the throats of these beings with sharp nails. As the beings lose their senses in the rushing waters of the *Vaitarani*, they are further deprived of their memories by the pain of the sharp thorns. They have no knowledge of their duties. Other *naraka-pala* play with the beings of hell, impaling them on long tridents and spears, and then throwing them to the ground.
