अनुवाद - उस्तरे के समान तेज धार से युक्त वैतरणी नदी के सम्बन्ध में सम्भवतया तुमने सुना होगा। वह नदी बड़ी दुर्गम है । उसे पार करना उसके पास जाना बहुत कठिन है । तीक्ष्ण बाण-बाण जैसे तीखे लोहे कांटे एवं शक्ति-शूल आदि तीखी नोंक वाले शस्त्रों हन्यमान मारे जाते, सताये जाते नरक के प्राणी घबरा कर उस नदी में कूद पड़ते हैं ।
नरकविभक्ति अध्ययनं
यदि ते श्रुता वैतरण्यमिदुर्गा निशितो यथा क्षुरइवतीक्ष्णस्त्रोताः । तरन्ति ते वैतरणी मभिदुर्गामिषु चोदिताः शक्तिसुहन्यमानाः ॥
टीका अपिच - सुधर्मस्वामी जम्बूस्वामिनं प्रतीदमाह-यथा भगवतेदमाख्यातं यदि 'ते' त्वया श्रुताश्रवणपथमुपागता ‘वैतरणी' नाम क्षारोष्णरूधिराकारजलवाहिनीनदी आभिमुख्येन दुर्गा अभिदुर्गा-दु:खोत्पादिका, तथा - निशितो यथा क्षुरस्तीक्ष्णो भवत्येवं तीक्षणानि - शरीरावयवानां कर्तकानि स्रोतांसि यस्याः सा तथा, ते च नारकास्तप्ताङ्गारसन्निभां भूमिं विहायोदकपिपासवोऽभितप्ताः सन्तस्तापापनोदायाभिषिषिक्षवो वा तां वैतरणी मभिदुर्गां तरन्ति कथम्भूताः ? इषुणा - शरेण प्रतोदेनेव चोदिता:- प्रेरिताः शक्तिभिश्च हन्यमानास्तामेव भीमां वैतरणीं तरन्ति तृतीयार्थे सप्तमी ॥८॥ किञ्च

टीकार्थ - श्री सुधर्मा स्वामी जम्बू स्वामी से कहते हैं कि भगवान महावीर ने जिसके विषय में आख्याद किया है - कहा है उस वैतरणी नामक नदी के सम्बन्ध में तुमने सुना होगा उस नदी में ऐसा पानी बहता रहता है, जो खारा है, उष्ण है और रक्त सदृश है । जैसे एक उस्तरे की धार बड़ी तेज होती है उसी तरह उस नदी की धारा बड़ी तीव्र है । उस धारा के नारक जीवों के लगने से नारक जीवों के अंग कट जाते हैं। इसलिए बड़ी दुर्गम है - दुःखोत्पादक है । उसमें जो प्राणी बहते हैं, वह उनमें बड़ा दुःख उत्पन्न करती है, तप्त एवं पिपासित नरक के प्राणी अंगारों के समान अत्यन्त उष्ण नरक भूमि का परित्याग कर अपना ताप मिटाने हेतु स्नान करने हेतु उस भयानक नदी में कूद पड़ते हैं । वे नरक के प्राणी कैसे हैं ? मानों उनके बाण लोहे के काँटे अथवा शूल - तीखे अकुंश आदि चुभोकर उन्हें पीडित किया गया हो। वैसी दशा में वे भयंकर वैतरणी नदी में कूद जाते हैं तैरते हैं, यहाँ तृतीया विभक्ति के रूप में सप्तमी विभक्ति हुई है ।

अनुवाद वैतरणी के क्लेश से उत्पीड़ित नारक के प्राणी नौका पर चढ़ने के लिए आने लगते हैं तब उन पर पहले से स्थित नारक देव उन अभागों की गर्दन कीलों से भेद डालते हैं । जो वैतरणी के दुःख से पहले से ही अपना भान भूल चुके हैं, होश हवाश गवाँ चुके हैं। वे नरक के जीव इस दुःख से और अधिक व्यथित हो उठते हैं। उन्हें कहीं दूसरे नरक देव अपने मनोविनोद हेतु नर्क गत प्राणियों को शूलों, त्रिशूलों में पिरोकर पृथ्वी पर पटक डालते हैं ।
