नरकविभक्ति अध्ययनं
इत्यादि तदेवं क्रूरसिंहकृष्ण सर्पवत् प्रकृत्यैव प्राणातिपातानुष्ठायी ' अनिर्वृतः 'कदाचिदप्यनुपशान्तः क्रोधाग्निना दह्यमानो यदि वा लुब्धकमत्स्यादिधकजीविकाप्रसक्तः सर्वदा वधपरिमामपरिणतोऽनुपशान्तो हन्यन्ते प्राणिनः स्वकृतकर्मविपाकेन यस्मिन् स घातो - नरकस्तमुप - सामीप्येनैति-याति, क: ? - 'बालः' अज्ञो रागद्वेषोदयवर्ती सः 'अन्तकाले' मरणकाले 'निहो 'त्ति न्यगधस्तात् 'णिसंति अन्धकारम्, अधोऽन्धकारं गच्छतीत्यर्थः तथा - स्वेन दुश्चरितेनाधः शिरः कृत्वा 'दुर्गं' विषमं यातनास्थानमुपैति अवाक्शिरा नरके पततीत्यर्थः ॥ ५ ॥ साम्प्रतं पुनरपि नरकान्तर्वर्तिनो नारका यदनुभवन्ति तद्दर्शयितुमाह
टीकार्थ यहां ढीठ पन को प्रागल्भ भय या प्रगल्भता कहा जाता है। जो पुरुष ढीठ होता है उसे प्रागभी भी कहते हैं । जिसका स्वभाव बहुत से प्राणियों का अत्यन्त घात या हनन करने का है, वह अतिपाति कहा जाता है । कहने का तात्पर्य यह है कि जो पुरुष प्राणियों की हिंसा करता हुआ धृष्टता के साथ कहता है कि वेद में विहित हिंसा वेद में जिस हिंसा का विधान है, वह हिंसा वास्तव में हिंसा नहीं है, अथवा राजाओं का तो यह धर्म आचार है, वे आखेट द्वारा अपना मनोविनोद करते हैं, मांस भक्षण, मदिरापान, अब्रह्मचर्य सेवन में दोष नहीं है क्योंकि ये कार्य जीवों के लिए स्वभाव सिद्ध है । इनसे निवृत्त - इनका त्याग करने का महान् फल है । जो निर्दय शेर और काले नाग के समान स्वभाव से ही प्राणियों का प्राणातिपात- घात करता है अथवा जो पशु वध, मत्स्यवध द्वारा आजीविका चलाता है, जो सदा वध परिणाम मारने की भावना लिए रहता है, कभी शान्त नहीं होता वह नर्क में जाता है। जहाँ अपने किये हुये कर्मों का फल भोगने के रूप में प्राणियों ता है । वह कौन है ? वह अज्ञ है - विवेक रहित है। उसके राग और द्वेष उदित हैं । वह मरकर नीचे - अधोलोक में - अन्धकार में जाता है। अपने द्वारा किये गये पापों के फल स्वरूप नीचा सिर किये भयंकर यातनापूर्ण स्थान को प्राप्त होता है । इसका यह तात्पर्य है कि वह नीचा सिर किये नर्क में गिरता है ।

हण छिंदह भिंदह णं दहेति, सद्दे सुणिंता परहम्मियाणं । ते नारगाओ भयभिन्नसन्ना, कंखंति कन्नाम दिसं वयामो ॥ ६ ॥
छाया जहि छिन्धि भिन्धि दह इति शब्दान् श्रुत्वा परमाधार्मिकाणाम् । नारकाः भयभिन्नसंज्ञाः कांक्षन्ति कां नाम दिशं व्रजामः ॥
भावार्थ परमा धार्मिक देवों द्वारा कहे गये मारो, छिन्न कर दो, काट डालो, भेदन करो, जला दो इत्यादि शब्द सुनकर नारक प्राणी भय से संज्ञाविहीन हो जाते हैं, अपना होश भूल जाते हैं। वे चाहते हैं कि हम किसी दिशा में कहीं भाग जाये ।

टीका - तिर्यङ्मनुष्यभवात्सत्त्वा नरकेषूत्पन्ना अन्तर्मुहूर्तेन निर्लूनाण्डजसन्निभानि शरीराण्युत्पादयन्ति, पर्याप्तिभावमागताश्चातिभयानकान् शब्दान् परमाधार्मिकजनितान् शृण्वन्ति, तद्यथा - 'हत' मुद्गरादिना 'छिन्त' खङ्गादिना 'भिन्त' शूलादिना 'दहत' मुर्मुरादिना णमितिवाक्यालङ्कारे, तदेवम्भूतान् कर्णासुखान् शब्दान् भैरवान् श्रुत्वा ते तु नारका भयोद्भ्रान्तलोचना भयेनभीत्या भिन्ना - नष्टा संज्ञा - अन्तःकरणवृत्तिर्येषां ते तथा नष्टसंज्ञाश्च 'कां दिशं व्रजामः' कुत्रगतानामस्माकमेवम्भूतस्यास्य महाघोरवदारुणस्यदुःखस्य त्राणंस्यादित्येतत्काङ्क्षन्तीति ॥६॥ तेच भयोद्रान्ता दिक्षुनष्टा यदनुभवन्ति तद्दर्शयितुमाह

This is the consequence of his own actions. He is drawn to hell, to its proximity. Who is this? It is the "child," the ignorant one, who is ruled by attachment and aversion. The point is that a man who commits violence against beings, with arrogance, says that the violence prescribed in the Vedas is not really violence, or that it is the duty of kings to hunt for pleasure, and that there is no fault in eating meat, drinking alcohol, or engaging in sexual misconduct, because these are natural for beings. To be free from these things, to abandon them, is a great benefit. The one who is merciless, like a lion or a black snake, who by nature kills beings, or who makes a living by killing animals or fish, who always has the intention to kill, who never finds peace, goes to hell. There, he suffers the consequences of his actions. Who is this? He is ignorant, devoid of wisdom. He is ruled by attachment and aversion. He dies and goes down, to the lower realms, to darkness. "Kill, cut, break, burn," they hear the sounds of the supremely righteous. The inhabitants of hell, their minds shattered by fear, wonder, "Which direction should we go?" || 6 ||

They have reached the point of exhaustion and hear the terrifying sounds made by the supremely righteous. These sounds are like, "Kill!" with a hammer, "Cut!" with a sword, "Break!" with a spear, "Burn!" with a firebrand, and so on. Hearing these terrible sounds, the inhabitants of hell, with eyes filled with fear, their minds shattered by fear and terror, lose their senses. They are those whose inner consciousness is lost. They wonder, "Which direction should we go?" They long for escape from this terrible, dreadful, and painful suffering. || 6 ||
