छाया इतिभीषवो निरये विविधसत्त्ववधनिरताः । सत्यभ्रष्टाश्चनरा जगति कृतपापसंघाताः ॥ १ ॥ टीकार्थ राग और द्वेष से युक्त जो मनुष्य एवं तिर्यञ्च प्राणी महा आरम्भ एवं महापरिग्रह में संलग्न हैं, तथा पंचेन्द्रिय प्राणियों के वध और अमिष सेवन आदि पापमय कार्यों में प्रवृत्त रहते हैं, असंयममय जीवन की इच्छा रखते हुए इस संसार में पापजनक कार्य करते हैं, प्राणियों के लिए भय जनक होने के कारण भयावह बनकर जीवों की हिंसा, असत्य भाषण आदि अकार्य करते हैं, ऐसे प्राणी अपने तीव्र पापों का उदय होने पर अत्यन्त भयोत्पादक तथा अपनी आँखों से जहाँ अपना शरीर भी दृष्टि गोचर नहीं होता, अवधि ज्ञान होते हुए भी दिन में उल्लू पक्षी की तरह जो अत्यल्प देख पाते हैं, ऐसे भयोत्पादक अंधकारमय नरक में पड़ते हैं ।
इस सम्बन्ध में आगम में वर्णन है।
हे भगवन् ! कृष्ण लेश्या युक्त नारक जीव, कृष्ण लेश्यामय अन्य नारक जीव को अवधि ज्ञान द्वारा चारों ओर देखता हुआ कितने क्षेत्र पर्यन्त जानता है, देखता है ?
गौतम ! बहुतर क्षेत्र तक नहीं जानता तथा नहीं देखता किन्तु इत्वरिक - स्वल्प क्षेत्र तक जानता है, और स्वल्प ही क्षेत्र तक देखता है । वह नारक तीव्र अर्थात् दुःसह-जिसे सहना बहुत कष्टकर होता है, रवदिर के अंगार की महाराशि से भी अधिक ताप से युक्त होता है, जो विषय भोग के सुरखों का त्याग नहीं करते, ऐसे भारी कर्मी प्राणी इस प्रकार के अत्यन्त वेदनामय नरकों में गिरते है, और वे वहाँ तरह-तरह की वेदनाएँ भोगते । कहा है

जो पुरुष विषय सुख का परित्याग नहीं करता, वह उस नरक में गिरता है, जिसमें प्रज्वलित अग्नि की शिखाएं-लपटें विद्यमान हैं जो संसार में दुःख का बहुत बड़ा स्थान है। नरक में परमाधार्मिक देव नारकीय जीवों की छाती को इस प्रकार पैरों से रौंदते हैं, उछालते हैं कि उनके मुख खून के फव्वारे छूटने लगते हैं, वे लौह के तीक्ष्ण आरे द्वारा उनके शरीर को चीर कर दो भाग कर देते हैं । नरक में छेदन भेदन किए प्राणियों के कोलाहल से सब दिशाएं भरी रहती हैं, जलते हुए नारकीय जीवों की रवोपड़ियां और अस्थियाँ चटकती हुई उछलती है । पीड़ा के कारण नारकीय जीव अत्यन्त क्रन्दन करते हैं । उन्हें कड़ाव भूनकर उनके पापों का फल दिया जाता है । शूल में पिरोकर उनके शरीर ऊपर उठाये जाते हैं, वह ऐसा स्थान है, जहाँ बड़े भयानक शब्द होते हैं, घोर अंधेरा है तथा बड़ी तेज बदबू आती है। नारकीय जीवों के बंधन गृह हैं, जहाँ उन्हें असह्य कष्ट दिया जाता है, कटे हुए हाथ पैरों से रिसते रवून और चर्बी का भीषण प्रवाह, जहाँ नारकीय जीवों के सिरों को काट-काटकर सिरों और धड़ों को अलग-अलग कर फेंका जाता है, जलती हुई संडासी द्वारा जहाँ नारकीय जीवों की जिह्वायें उत्पाटित की जाती हैं, जहाँ तीक्ष्ण किनारों वाले कांटों से युक्त पेड़ों के साथ नारकीय जीवों के शरीर रगड़कर जर्जर कर दिए जाते हैं, क्षत विक्षत कर दिए जाते हैं इस प्रकार जहाँ आँख की पलक झपकने तक के समय के लिए भी प्राणियों को सुख प्राप्त नहीं होता, निरन्तर दुःख ही दुःख होता है ।

Those who are consumed by attachment and aversion, who engage in grand enterprises and accumulate vast possessions, who kill sentient beings, consume flesh, and indulge in other sinful acts, who desire a life of unrestrained indulgence, and who commit acts of violence, deceit, and other transgressions, will, upon the ripening of their karma, be plunged into the terrifying darkness of hell.

Here, their bodies are invisible to their own eyes, their vision clouded like that of an owl in the daytime, despite possessing the knowledge of clairvoyance.

"O Lord, how far can a being in hell, marked by the black karma, see with their clairvoyance?"
