नरकविभक्ति अध्ययनं
एवं मया पृष्टो महानुभाव, इदमब्रवीत् काश्यप आशुप्रज्ञः । प्रवेदयिष्यामि दुःखमर्थदुर्गमादीनिकं दुष्कृतिकं पुरस्तात् ॥
अनुवाद - मेरे द्वारा यों पूछे जाने पर महानुभाव - अतिशयों की महिमा से युक्त, आशुप्रज्ञ - समग्र वस्तुओं में सदा उपयोग युक्त, काश्यप गौत्र में समुत्पन्न भगवान् महावीर ने कहा कि नरक स्थान अत्यन्त दुःखप्रद है । अज्ञानी - असर्वज्ञ जीवों द्वारा अज्ञेय है। वह पापिष्ठ और दीन हीन जीवों का आवास स्थान है। मैं आगे यह बतलाऊँगा ।
टीका - तथा 'एवम्' अनन्तरोक्तं मया विनेयेनोपगम्य पृष्टो महांश्चतुस्त्रिंशदतिशयरूपोऽनुभावोमाहात्म्यं यस्य स तथा, प्रश्नोत्तरकालं च 'इदं' वक्ष्यमाणं मो इति वाक्यालङ्कारे, केवलालोकेन परिज्ञाय मत्प्रश्ननिर्वचनम् 'अब्रवीत् ' उक्तवान् कोऽसौ ?' काश्यपो' वीरो वर्धमानस्वामी आशुप्रज्ञः सर्वत्र सदोपयोगात्, स चैवं मया पृष्टो भगवानिदमाह-यथा यदेतद्भवता पृष्टस्तदहं 'प्रवेदयिष्यामि' कथयिष्याम्यग्रतो दत्तावधान: शृण्विति, तदेवाह‘दुःखम्' इति नरकं दुःखहेतुत्वात् असदनुष्ठानं यदिवा-नरकावास एव दुःखयतीति दुःखं अथवा असातावेदनीयोदयात् तीव्र पीडात्मकं दुःखमिति एतच्चार्थतः - परमार्थतो विचार्यमाणं 'दुर्गं' गहनं विषमं दुर्विज्ञेयं असर्वज्ञेन, तत्प्रतिपादक प्रमाणा भावादित्यभिप्रायः, यदिवा - 'दुहमट्ठदुग्गंति दुःखमेवार्थो यस्मिन् दुःखनिमित्तो वा दुःखप्रयोजनो वा स दुःखार्थो - नरकः, स च दुर्गो-विषमो दुरुत्तरत्वात् तं प्रतिपादयिष्ये, पुनरपि तमेव विशिनष्टि - आसमन्ताद्दीनमादीनं यस्मिन् स आदीनिक:- अत्यन्तदीनसत्त्वाश्रयस्तथादुष्टं कृतं दुष्कृतम् असदनुष्ठानं पापं वा तत्फलं वा असातावेदनीयोदय रूपं तद्विद्यते यस्मिन्स दुष्कृतिकस्तं, 'पुरस्ताद्' अग्रतः प्रतिपादयिष्ये, पाठान्तरं वा 'दुक्कडिणं' ति दुष्कृतं विद्यते येषां ते दुष्कृतिनो - नारकास्तेषां सम्बन्धि चरितं 'पुरस्तात् ' पूर्वस्मिन् जन्मनि नरकगतिगमनयोग्यं यत्कृतं तत्प्रतिपादयिष्य इति ॥ २॥ यथाप्रतिज्ञातमाह

टीकार्थ भगवान महावीर के शिष्य श्री सुधर्मास्वामी कहते हैं कि मैंने उन चतुर्विंशति अतिशय युक्त प्रभुवर के समीप जाकर यह पूछा, तब उन्होंने इस प्रकार कहा - प्रश्न करने के अनन्तर भगवान ने वक्ष्यमाण रूप में जैसा आगे विवक्षित होगा, उत्तर दिया । इस गाथा में 'मो' वाक्यलंकार के अर्थ में आया है । प्रभु महावीर ने केवलज्ञान द्वारा सब पदार्थों को जानकर मेरे प्रश्न का उत्तर दिया था । भगवान् कौन हैं ? वे काश्यप गौत्र में समुत्पन्न प्रभु वर्धमान स्वामी हैं। वे आशुप्रज्ञ हैं, क्योंकि सदैव समस्त पदार्थों में उनका उपयोग रहता है। मेरे द्वारा जब प्रश्न किया गया तब भगवान् ने ऐसा कहा कि तुमने जो पूछा है, मैं आगे बतलाऊँगा, तुम दत्तावधान होकर ध्यान देकर श्रवण करो। वही कहते हैं- नरक भूमि दुःख का कारण है, वह दुष्कर्मों का फल होने के कारण दुःखात्मक है, अथवा वह जीवों के लिए दुःखप्रद है । अथवा असातावेदनीय कर्म के उदय के कारण नरक भूमि में तीव्र पीडाएँ भोगनी होती है । इसलिए वे दुःख रूप हैं । असर्वज्ञ प्राणी नरक भूमि को जान पायें, यह कठिन है, अर्थात् वे नहीं जान सकते, क्योंकि ऐसा कोई प्रमाण नहीं है, जो नरक के अस्तित्व को सिद्ध कर सके, इसका यह अभिप्राय है । अथवा नरक भूमि एक मात्र दुःख देने हेतु निर्मित है, इस लिए वह दुःखार्थ है । उस भूमि को पारकर पाना दुर्गम है, कठिन है । इसलिए वह दुर्ग है, मैं उसे बतलाऊँगा ।
