Demise of Lord Buddha : A Controversy regarding date

Ashoka and they seem to be on according record with the Ceylonese tradition which hold that the Coronation of Ashoka took place 218 years after Buddha's death. Taking into consideration the ancient chronology of Mauryan Kings, namely Chandragupta (24 years), Bindusar (28 years) and Ashoka (Coronation delayed by four years) the Coronation date of Ashoka has been worked out ( 325.24.28.4 years) as 269 B.C. in that ease the nirvana date of Buddha comes to (269 +218 ) 487 B.C.
Dr. J.F. Fleet had worked out a chronological table of Mauryan rulers. According to the calculations Chandragupta became the King of North India 162 years after the death of Lord Buddha. He has suggested the accession date between Kartik Shukla 8 which comes between 23rd September 321 B.C. and 1st January 320 B.C. According to him Bindusar succeeded Chandragupta 186 years after the death of Buddha which comes to 1st February 296 B.C. Lastly Bindusar died and Ashoka seized the power 14 years after the death of Lord Buddha. Regarding Ashoka he was appointed as King 218 years after the death of Buddha and early in the bright fortnight of jyestha in all probability on the day of Shukla 5 which comes to 25th April 264 B.C. The date 264 B.C. has the corroboration with the Ceylonese account. The Ceylonese accounts states that Devanampiya Tissa was appointed as king of Ceylon for the first time 236 years after the death of Buddha and about 17 years after the appointment of Ashoka which comes to 6th November 247 B.C. + 17 = 264 B.C. which would be the date' of Ashoka Coronation. In this case the nirvana date of Buddha would be 264 + 218 = 482 B.C. According to Fleet Ashoka issued his last Edict early in the 39th year of his abdication.
For calculating the nirvana date of Buddha one has to look to the figures in the various inscriptions (Sasaram, Rupnath, Siddhapore, Brahmagiri, Jatinga-Rameshwar, Erraguddi and Govimath) it appears almost certain that the figure 256 is the number of year from nirvana date up to the
