Secondly if Upali wrote a copy of Vinaya Pitaka it is not likely that identical copy should have been carried to China. Lastly the process of adding one dot every year for a continuous 975 years is extremely precarious. However this type of record seems to reveal some very alarming information but it is risky as well to put absolute reliance at least for calculating the correct dating. But J. Takaksu has held the view that the evidence of Sanghbbadra is worth noticing. But as this part of the evidence was based on Acharya tradition hence no exact system is so far available. The first information was that there were only 975 dots, while from other sources it is known that an ascetic by name Chau perhaps continued marking till A.D. 535, when there were 1020 dots. On this information it becomes difficult to work out an exact dating moreover the Buddhist writer in China too did not consider that an authoritative fact. Scholars have attempted to wor kout the nirvana date of Buddha on the basis of chronological table of Mauryan rulers. They have tried to ascertain the Coronation date of King Ashoka and then others adding 218 years with the Coronation date they have calculated the date of the great demise. For such calculation they have started from Chandragupta who reigned for 24 years. Again Bindusar ruled for 28 years while Dr. Fleet has taken this, the Vayu Purana has stated 25 years for his reign. Lastly Ashoka was Coroneted four years after he succeeded his father Bindusar. The Ceylonese tradition informs us that Ashoka Coronation took place 218 year after the nirvana of Buddha. It is duly supported indirectly by Tibetan records which are absolutely an independent source of information.
The Tibetan tradition is held to have been the correct source regarding the period intervening between the death of Buddha and certain events related with the reign of
