श्रमण-संस्कृति time of engravement of the inscription i.e. 218 + 38 = 256 (218 years comes for the Coronation date from nirvana of Buddha and the figure 38 comes for the date of engravement of inscription from the date of Coronation). Hence it appears quite acceptable the figure 256 of the various inscriptions is the number of years from the date of Buddha's nirvana. Now if the accession date of Ashoka is obtained from the chronological table of the Mauryan rulers it would become easy to pick out the actual date of King Ashoka Coronation. The information of the genealogy of Mauryan kings is essential. It is known from various sources that Chandragupta ruled for 24 years and Bindusar ruled for 28 years and the actual Coronation of Ashoka was delayed for 4 years.
From the Greek writers it is known that Chandragupta became King of North India between 521 B.C. to 326 B.C. Different writers have selected different dates i.e. 325, 321, 316,315 and 312 B.C. (JR.A.S. 1906; p 984 - J.F. Fleet) V. Smith (Early history of India p. 173) has suggested 321 B.C. as the accession date of Chandragupta, Buddhist tradition of Ceylon refers the date 162 years after the parinirvana of Buddha. The Jain date for Chandragupta's accession is 313 B.C. (Ibid p. 263) in such a difficult position it is not possible to decide a single date for accession and there by the Coronation date of Ashoka the entire chronology of Mauryan Kings is rounded in doubts it becomes a problem to pinpoint a demise year of Lord Buddha.
