अर्थ-नित्यनिगोद जीवोंकी, इतर ( चतुर्गति ) निगोदिया जीवोंकी सात सात लाख योनि हैं। पृथ्वी जल तेज वायु कायके जीवोंकी सात सात लाख योनि हैं। वनस्पति कायके जीवोंकी दशलाख, दो इंद्रिय ते इंद्रिय चौ इंद्रिय जीवोंकी छह लाख, देव नारकी पंचेंद्रियतिर्यंचोंकी चार चार लाख योनि हैं । मनुष्योंकी चौदह लाख योनि हैं । सब मिलकर चौरासी लाख योनि हैं। उत्पत्तिका जो कारण वह योनि है ॥ २२६॥ तसथावरा य दुविहा जोगगइकसायइंदियविधीहिं । बहुविध भव्वाभव्वा एस गदी जीवणिद्देसे ॥२२७॥
त्रसस्थावराः च द्विविधा योगगतिकषायेंद्रियविधिभिः । बहुविधा भव्याभव्या एषा गतिः जीवनिर्देशे ॥ २२७॥
अर्थ-कायमार्गणासे त्रस स्थावर-कायरूप दोप्रकारके जीव हैं । योग गति कषाय इंद्रियके भेदोंसे तथा भव्य अभव्यके भेदसे भी जीव बहुत प्रकारके होते हैं ॥ २२७ ॥ इनका विशेष कथन गोमटसार जीवकांडसे जानना।।
आगे जीवका लक्षण कहते हैंणाणं पंचविधं पिअ अण्णाणतिगं च सागरुवओगो। चदुदंसणमणगारो सव्वे तल्लक्खणा जीवा ॥२२८ ॥ ज्ञानं पंचविधं अपि अज्ञानत्रिकं च साकारोपयोगः । चतुर्दर्शनमनाकारः सर्वे तल्लक्षणा जीवाः ॥ २२८ ॥
अर्थ-ज्ञान पांच प्रकारका है अज्ञानके तीन भेद हैं इसतरह ज्ञानोपयोगके आठ भेद हैं वह ज्ञान साकार होता है। दर्शन चक्षुदर्शनादिके भेदसे चार प्रकार है वह अनाकार होता है।
