( 47 ) divisions of the text of the Rgveda. Three figures refer to the Mandala, the Sükta and the Mantra. Four figures represent the Astaka, the Adhyaya, the Varga, and the Mantra. Of these two, the division of the text into Mandalas, Sūktas, and Mantras is the more ancient. The ten Mandalas of the Rgveda are clearly referred to in the following passages:
दाशतयीभ्यां वषट्कुर्यादिति हैक आहुः Sān. Br. 8.7 न दाशतय्येकपदा काचिदस्तीति वै यास्कः । RPr. 17.25. Max Muller's ed. and 17.42. Mangaladeva's ed.
आग्नावैष्णवं हविर्न त्वक्संस्तविकी दशतयीषु विद्यते । N.7.8 तदेतदेकमेव जातवेदसं गायत्रं तृचं दशतयीषु विद्यते । N. 7.20. तदेतदृभोश्च बहुवचनेन चमसस्य च संस्तवेन बहूनि दशतयीषु सूक्तानि भवन्ति ।

II. 16. तदेतदेकमेव वैश्वदेवं गायत्रं तृचं दशतयीषु विद्यते । N. 12. 40. सप्तचत्वारिंशन्मत्रावरुण्यो गायत्र्यो दाशतयीषु तासां मैत्रावरुणः। SSS. 12.2.16. षट्चत्वारिंशदैन्द्राग्न्यो गायत्र्यो दाशतयीषु तासामच्छावाकः । SSS. 12.2.22. पुर उष्णिक तृतीया दाशतयेनाध्यायेन तां बहवृचा अधीयते । NS. 2. II. नाराशंसीरित्यूचस्ताः प्रतीयाद् याभिः स्तुतिर्दाशतयीषु राज्ञाम् । BD. 3. 154. विस्पष्टं जातवेदस्यं प्रेति दाशतयीषु तु । BD. 8. 88. पञ्चाशीतिर्दाशतयेऽनुवाका दृष्टाः पुराणर्ऋषिभिर्महात्मभिः ।
Anuvākānukramaņi 37. The word दशतयी or दाशतयी means having ten limbs'. The suffix is added to a word signifying number, in the sense of a 'limb'. Panini has the following Sutra for this purpose: संख्याया अवयवे तयप् 5.2 42. The reference is evidently to the Rgveda, described in the above quoted passages as 'ten-limbed,' i.e., having ten Mandalas. Şaļguruśișya has the following remark, in his commentary on the Anuvākānukramani :-दाशतये दशमण्डलयोगिनि वेदे। 38.
The word Mandala itself is used in the sense of a division of the Rgveda in BD. III. 28, II6; V. I03; VI. 39, I30, 145, Katyayana's Sarvānukramani, Avākānukramani and Caranavyaba.
___ The word Astaka is used in the BD. III. 90; VII II8, but not in the sense of a division of the Rgveda. Similarly the word varga is used in the BD. i.s; ii.85, 86, 87; VII 116 but not in the sense of a subdivision of the Rgveda. But the word Adhyāya in the sense of a chapter of the Ķgveda is used both by Anuvākānukramani and Caranavyaba अध्यायानां चतुःषष्टिमण्डलानि दशैव तु। Anu.38.
