अध्यायाश्चतुःषष्टिः ... अयं देवायेत्यादि ६४ चतुःषष्टिरध्याया इत्यर्थः । Caranaryūha.
Mention of sixtyfour chapters implies the division of the text of the RV. into Astakas although the actual use of that word, in that sense, is not seen in ancient Sanskrit Literature.
The word varga however in the sense of a sub-division of the RV. is used by Anmākānukramani :- वर्गाः षडधिकद्विसहस्रमित्यर्थः 38 Although there is no direct reference to the division of the RV. into Astakas etc. in ancient Sanskrit literature like the Brahmanas, Aranyakas etc., this division seems to have become popular in later times. It is based on symmetry. It divides the Ṛgveda into almost equal and uniform divisions. The varga constitutes a convenient daily lesson for a student.
In addition to the two divisions mentioned above, there is a third division also. It divides each Mandala into Anuvākas, Suktas, and Mantras. It is described by Saunaka, in his Anuvākānukramani :
