( 46 ) of the text of the RV., or any help which it affords for the exegesis of the RV. cannot be ignored. Its evidence is invaluable and has therefore been utilised in the present work, particularly on any point where doubts arise or where interpretations differ. But such cases are not many. The extent of additional information, in cases of doubt or different interpretations, derived from the padapātha is quite inconsiderable and its inclusion does not add substantially to the bulk of the present edition. It was therefore duly made available in footnotes. But the opinion of several European and almost all Indian scholars is against the exclusion of even the padapatha. Professor Sten Konow says in his letter, 'I am very much in doubt about the padapātha. It seems to me that it is a serious drawback that it is not printed. Even if you can usually see how it must have been, it will often be necessary to consult other editions. And it would be an advantage to the student if he could be able to work at the hand of this edition without consulting other ones.' Mahāmahopādhyāya Dr. Ganga Natha Jha, M.A., D.Litt., ex-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Allahabad, makes the following remarks in his letter, 'some misgivings have already been entertained in regard to the omitting of the padapātha. I am sorry that the reasons given in the letters do not quite satisfy me regarding the advisability of the omission. .... It seems to me, therefore, false economy to omit this accompaniment to the text, because monumental works like this are published only once in a generation and as the Rgveda is the earliest literary monument of the Aryan race and is not easy to understand, it does not appear to be wise to omit the slightest aid to the comprehension of the meaning of the text.
I suppose, however, it is too late now to make amends, but perhaps if you agree with my view you might add an appendix at the end of each volume giving the padapatha.'
In accordance with M.M. Dr. Ganga Natha Jha's suggestion, the Publishers have decided to add an appendix, giving the padapātha. Thus the intended saving of space, time, and labour has not been practicable.
