"Bereft of those precious unities they have now degenerated into a community of beggers, whose highest ideal on this side of every Eternity is to glut themselves with sweet-meats, shorn of decent dress, with eyes outstretched and reddened by Bhang, with ashes adorning their foreheads, pluming themselves on the idea of an indulgence in humorous but obscene talk, these pot bellied heroes are to be witnessed, wondering about in groups like so many beasts in heards, in all the leading cities of India at all times in the year, in the rainy season in particular, our description of the degradation of the present Chanbes of Muttra is, by no means over-drawn.”
अर्थात् - एक समय वह था जब कि वे लोग भारतवर्षकी बहुतसी जातियोंके पुरोहित और धर्मकमा में सम्मति देनेवाले अर्थात् उपदेशक थे । उन जातियों के आदमी उनकी अनुमतिके अनुसार सब काम करते थे । उनका कहना कभी नहीं टालते थे और उनका बहुत आदर-सत्कार करते थे । इन उक्त बातोंके वे उस समय सर्वथा योग्य थे। किंतु आजकल उनका उद्योग सिर्फ इस बातका है कि किसी प्रकार उनको अच्छेसे अच्छा भोजन मिल जाया करे, बस केवल यही उनका धर्म-कर्म है । वे लोग अपनी उदर-दरी भरनेके लिये मसखरेपनकी अश्लील बातें बकते हुए, पशुओंकी तरह भारतके प्रधान प्रधान नगरों में सदैव घूमते दिखाई देते हैं ।
