They are still very celebrated as wrestlers and in Mathura Mahatmya, their learning and other virtues also are extolled in the most extravagant terms, but either the writer was prejudiced or time has had a sadly deleriorating effect. They are now ordinarily described by their own countrymen as a low and ignorant horde of rapacious mendicants, like the Pragwalas at Allahabad they are recognized local cicerones ; and they may always be seen with their portly forms lolling about near the most popular Ghats and Temples ready to bear down upon the first pilgrim that approaches."
अर्थात्-मथुरा में लगभग छः हजार चौबे रहते हैं। उनकी चालढाल, बोलचाल, रहन-सहन, उठना बैठना एक अनोखे ढङ्गका है। उनकी पहलवानीकी बड़ी तारीफ है । उनकी विद्या और योग्यताकी मथुरा महात्म्यमें बड़ी तारीफ की है। परन्तु उनके वर्तमान कृत्योंसे जान पड़ता है कि या तो लिखनेवाले हीने इक-तरफ़ी बातें लिखी हैं या समयके प्रभावसे वे सब बातें नष्ट हो गई हैं। आज-कल उनके ही देशवासी उन्हें अति नीच, अपढ़ और लुटेरे कहते हैं। वे लोग बहुधा यात्रियोंको शहरकी इमारतें दिखाते हैं, बहुधा घाटों और मन्दिरों में घूमते फिरते हैं और ज्यों ही कोई यात्री आता हुआ दिखाई पड़ता है कि उस पर एकदमसे टूट पड़ते हैं।"
