ब्राह्मण- प्रदर्शित इन वैदिक शब्दों के अर्थो का क्या आधार है ।
ब्राह्मण ग्रन्थों ने इन में से बहुत से अर्थ साक्षात् मन्त्रों से लिये हैं । समाधिस्थ ऋषियों के निष्कलंक मनों में बहुत सा अर्थ परमात्मा की कृपा से भी प्राप्त हुआ है । वह भी इन्हीं ब्राह्मणों में बन्द है । ऋषि-प्रोक्त वा परतः प्रमाण होते हुए 1 मी वेदार्थ का परम तत्व इन्हीं ब्राह्मणों से जाना जा सकता हैं । ऐसा ही आर्यावर्त के सब विद्वान् मानते आये हैं । हां, नवीन पाश्चात्य लेखक इस के विपरीत कहते हैं । हम पहले उन्हीं की प्रतिज्ञा का निराकरण करेंगे । बोडन का वयोवृद्ध संस्कृताध्यापक आर्थर एनर्थानि मैकडानल लिखता है*
The investigation of the Brahmans has shown that. being mainly concerned with speculatian on the nature of sacrifice, they were already far removed from the spirit of the composers of the Vedic hymns, and contain very little capable of throwing light on the original sense of those hymns. They only give occasional explanations of the sense of the Mantras and these explanations are often very fanciful. How completely they can misunderstand the meaning intended by the seers appears sufficiently from the following two examples. The Satapatha Brahmana (vii. 4, 1, 9 ) in referring to the refrain of Rv. 'to what god should we offer worship with oblation. says 'Ka is Prajapati : to him let us offer oblation. Another Brahmana passage, in explaining the epithet ' golden-handed ' ( हिरण्य - पाणि) as applied to the sun. remarks that the sun had lost his hand and had got instead one of gold. Quite apart from the linguistic evidence. such interpretations show that there was already a considerable gap between the period of the Brahmanas and that of the Mantras..
