My Revered Guru : Dr. Jain
39
When Muni Lavchandraji observed Chaturmas at Muzaffarpur in 1957, he proposed Dr. Jain and the local people to hold a religious conference of all Indian religions for seven days. He atones took the responsibility and organised it very successfully with the help of his students and the local volunteers. I found in Muni a liberal Jain saint ever come across by me like a spiritual light, while Dr. Jain was the guide spirit of the conference. He came to the resource of the able speakers when they were in difficulties to answer to the queries of the intelligent listeners and thus be satisfied all with his proper answers to them on behalf of the speakers. Here he had the intellectual majesty above all.
I remember the day when he spoke to the workers of a Sugar Mill at Bhaisa Lotan on the contribution of Bihar to Indian culture.
He said that Bihar is the birth place of three Indian systems of thought Vedantra of Upanishadic philosophy, Buddhism and Jainism. They took their birth in the North-East, but they were much developed in the South. In a word Bihar (a monastery) was the mother of these three systems. Truly speaking it is so. Biharis are called Buddhus (foolish) by the arrogant foolish people of other parts of India. But Dr. Jain never behaved in that manner, so he won the hearts of the Biharis with his love and respect for them. In return he received their spontaneous love. He told me once that when he was introduced by Sri J.C. Mathur, I.C.S. the then Education Secretary of Bihar Govt. to the people of Hazipur, lakhs of people came to see him with love and respect. At Vaishali I myself observed their love and respect for him on the occasion of Mahavira Jayanti every year. The so-called scholars with their false intellectual ego without any heart or love for the people avoid the association of the people and sometimes dislike them. But Dr. Jain loved them with respect. On the request of late Dr. Amarnath Jha and Sri J.C. Mathur, I.S.C. the then Education Secretary of the Bihar Government, Dr. Jain accepted the offer of Directorship of Vaishali Research Institute in 1955-56, which was born in a mysterious way because of the
