________________ My Revered Guru : Dr. Jain 37 own failure as teachers. It is pathetic condition for them to say so. What was the cause of the success of Dr. Jain as a Guru? It was the student's welfare which was the main cause of his success in attracting students with his magnetic affectionate heart. Dr. Jain as a Welfare Teacher On the very first day when I joined the Vaishali Institute he told me that there are some places even in London where the people could get their home-made food-stuff at less cost, if they managed their own mess themselves. So he advised me to start, common selfmanaged mess for our food. Somebody must be there to bell the cat. "You are the elder, so you should start it in co-operation with other boys.' I don't like to see my boys going for food to the dirty hotels he said. At first I hesitated to take up the responsibility because of my past bitter experiences in Calcutta University Hostel; but at last I had to take the responsibility as the prefect of our newly started hostel, the selection of which was made by me wining over Dr. Jain with my convincing arguments to cancel his own order for another building for the sake of our welfare. Here is the point of student's welfare when the teacher revises his decision and accepts that of his student for the interests of all students. After fifteen days when he visited the hostel, he was glad to see it suitable for living on the completion of its repair, white-washing etc. He told me, 'Sikdar, we have come to the right place. I am pleased to see it as a student's home. Whenever you need anything for it, approach me directly. I shall do the needful. On my recommendation he appointed a ward servant even without the sanction of the Bihar Government and paid his salary for 12 years from his own pocket as loan to us in the absence of the sanction of this post. Whenever there was shortage of money to run the mess, he at once gave me the required amount as loan so that we could tide our crisis. He sanctioned money for our out-door games so that we could maintain for physical fitness. He used to say that a student must live once at least the collective life of the Hostel; otherwise he could not become fully developed to lead a collective social life. One must depend on his own self for essential work. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
