स्वर्ण-जयन्ती गौरव-ग्रन्थ
Besides his own research work and that of guiding his scholars, Dr. Jain used to take regular Post-Graduate classes almost alone, I should say, as there was one halfhearted assistant professor with him. He (Dr. Jain) made the study of Prakrit and Jainology so interesting, popular and attractive with his mode of teachings and magnetic personality endowed with affection for his students that within a short period the old learned Maithili Brahmin Sanskrit Pandits of 60 to 70 years age came to him to study Prakrit and Jainology, by giving up their jobs as teachers in local Sanskrit Colleges and Schools or by taking study leave. All of them were senior to him in age. But they paid their due respect to Dr. Jain always by touching his feet like ancient pupils of India. Here I recall the remark of Dr. Satkari Mukarjee, the erudite scholar of Bengal, about Dr. Jain, when he happened to visit our Institution on his way to Mithila from Nalanda. The Shudras count seniority by age, but the true Brahmanas count seniority by knowledge. Dr. Jain is senior in every respect by knowledge as a true Brahmana, with a dispassionate feeling towards worldly things.'
In the course of time some Hindi, Sanskrit and English students having their M.A. degrees in their respective subjects became students of Prakrit and Jainology. Even two clerks (one of them was from R.M.S.) and a principal of local Higher Secondary School studied Prakrit and Jainology under his inspiration and obtained their M.A. degrees in Prakrit and Jainology in the 1st class. What was the attraction behind their study in these subjects? It was the intellectual majesty of a great Guru like Dr. Jain with a loving heart for his pupils which attracted a host of students from different walks of life. Did this study pay them? I say, no. Then why did they study the subject? The answer is simple. They felt proud to become the pupils of such a noble hearted Guru endowed with the knowledge of the heart of Jainology. Today the professors of Indology, Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit lament in the open in all India Seminars for the loss of interest of the students in the study of these subjects and ultimately they blame the students for their mediocre merit, etc. to console themselves for their
